The Olentangy Boys Cross Country team is off to an amazing season so far.  The boys took home a first place trophy in both the Varsity and the JV meets at the Westerville North meet. Last weekend, Olentangy ran in the Hartford meet, taking second place, both Varsity and JV.  The team has depth and has been training hard. Watch out for them.

Parents, guardians, team members and friends of the program -

Olentangy RunBrave cross country is back !

Attached is our summer schedule - always subject to change especially locations - will communicate via email and the senior captains will maintain a remind app to spread the news to team members and families

The basics are:  June - starting on Monday, 6/7 we will start with Mon & Wed mornings 8:30-10 am at the rec area below Alum Creek Dam then Thursday evenings 7:00-8:30 pm at Shanahan track/stadium   July - same as June and we will add Tuesday evenings at HighBanks Metro Park - Big Meadows area 7:00-8:30 pm

OYAA cross country program is back in 2021 - the 3rd-6th grade runners will run practice with the team on Monday mornings and Thursday evenings during the months of June and July.  Coach Dewese and I can handle the younger kids but it is always helpful to have the high schoolers lend a hand.

All activities are voluntary in June and July.

As I have stressed during my tenure as the coach the most important goal is to get in miles during the months of June and July.  Just coming to the voluntary practices/runs will not be enough.   All team members need to be running on the non-meeting days.   As a rule of thumb in June you should be getting in 4-5 days of running and July 5-6 days of running a week to prepare you for August 2nd.

The team will start mandatory practice on Monday, August 2 at HighBanks Metro Park in the morning 8:30-10:30 am.  We will practice every week day at HighBanks until school starts on Thursday, August 19.  Heads up we will have at least 2 time trials the first week and depending on how many young men are interested in being on the team - potential cuts are possible.

A special date to be put on the calendar is Thursday, August 5th.  That day the Olentangy Athletic Boosters will be a hosting speaker for all the student-athletes of the Olentangy Local School District.  At this time the sessions are scheduled for 11:00 am, 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm.  The team will attend one of the sessions and it is mandatory.  More details will be discussed and once I have the exact time of the session the team will be attending I would let everyone know.

I am planning on having a parent meeting in the evening during the last week of June to welcome new parents to the program.  I will get out the details next week.

At this time we are finalizing our meet schedule - we are hoping to have a full meet schedule.  Some of the meets we have gone to in the past have not officially announced that they are back for fall 2021, yet.  I am hoping that they will announce soon.  I would plan on meets every Saturday starting August 28 to November 6 (State Meet).

As I stated earlier in the email - all dates, locations, activities are subject to change.  It sounds like this season will be more like seasons in the past but as we have all learned in the last year plus that the world can change in a heartbeat.

Summer miles bring fall smiles

Please look at the attachments - both attachments are the same just different formats  - any questions feel free to email, call, or text.

Keep / start running !

OLENTANGY Boys XC are not Putting Around on the Course

The Olentangy Boys Cross Country team were the 1st place champions of this years’ 46th Annual Erin L. Nance Fall Distance Classic this past weekend, September 28, 2019.  The boys competed against 21 teams on a beautiful but hilly golf course in London, Ohio.  Because of the hills and the heat, the boys ran slower than usual but that definitely didn’t stop them from giving the race everything they had. In fact, the Gahanna-Lincoln coach was impressed with how the boys finished the race with their strong hill running, said Head Coach Kenneth Whalen. Apparently, the hills at Highbanks Metro Park are working wonders for the boys. Mikey Worboy finished in third place with a 17:11, followed by Chandler Moyer in 8th with a 17:43. The rest of the Varsity team included Luke Galloway, Taye Gonzalez, Patrick Schirtzinger, Jackson Schultz, and Preston Smith.  Whalen mentioned, “This is the most hardware and awards that the team has received at this meet in my 5 years as a coach.” All of the Varsity boys walked away with medals and plaques and they have the huge team trophy and coach award.

The Olentangy open boys team came in with a strong 2nd place out of 14 teams, losing by 4 points to Gahanna Lincoln. Points are a huge deal. Gahanna had 40, Olentangy had 44, and third place Teays Valley had 96. The margin is tremendous. David Moore took 2nd place in the run with an 18:26 and Nate Karr took 4th with an 18:35. Fifteen of the JV runners received medals at this race. When asking Whalen what he thought about this race, he said “Look what happens when all 42 members of the team are there!” The event was perfect and so was the outcome. Way to Run Brave.
