Redlegs Eliminated in Heartbreaker

Impact 7 Redlegs 6

After a dramatic Redlegs comeback to take the lead in the top of the 7th, the Impact Baseball team provided their own heroics with a two run homer to take a 7-6 and eliminate the Redlegs.  The Impact went on to capture the tournament championship with wins over the Trailblazers and Demand Command.

Redlegs Sweep 2!

The Redlegs won twice on Sunday, posting a 7-3 win over Madison Blue and followed that with a 7-1 victory over the Powerhouse.

In game one, Brady Linkel pitched 4 innings of 2 hit baseball, allowing only two runs with six k's.  Offensively, Aaron Greiwe homered, doubled, scored twice, and knocked in two runs; Caiden Yorn was on base all three times he came to the plate with a single, two walks, and one RBI; and Linkel added an RBI hit as well as scoring a run and drawing a walk.

Greiwe was the starting pitcher in game two and provided another outstanding outing for the Redlegs, as he pitched 5 innings of one-run baseball, striking out a career high 11 along the way.  Greiwe stayed hot at the plate, going 2-3 with a double and two runs scored; Linkel also doubled and drove in a run; Logan Eggleston went 1-1 with a walk and HBP; and Blane Redd enjoyed a 2-3 day as well as pitching a perfect inning in relief.

The Redlegs are now 3-1 on the season, tied for first place at the half way point.

Redlegs Split Opening Weekend

Game 1 = Redlegs vs. Demand Command

Bats were quiet in the opening game as the Demand Command team registered a 12-0 win over the Redlegs.  Aaron Greiwe had the only two hits for the Redlegs, while Kyle Wilson suffered the loss on the mound.

Game 2 = County Line Sluggers vs. Redlegs

The offense rebounded from game one, scoring 8 runs on 5 hits as well as drawing 8 walks in an 8-0 victory.  Brogan Howard was the hitting star in this game, driving home 4 runs with a double and a triple.  Logan Eggleston added two singles with an RBI while Ethan Meadows delivered an RBI single.  Brady Linkel picked up the win with three shutout innings, with Blane Redd and Brogan Howard tossing scoreless innings in relief.

Redlegs Fall League Champions!!!

The Redlegs put together 3 consecutive wins on Sunday to win a dramatic Fall League Championship!!!

Huge effort from all the players - 5 games in three days, players playing hurt, and an exhausted pitching staff - all the ingredients for a championship.

The regular season concluded with two games on Saturday, September 23, setting the stage for Sunday's single elimination tourney.  The Redlegs finished the regular season with a 3 win, 3 loss, and 2 tie record (ties happen due to strict time limitations), earning 4 seed in the 10 team league.

Game 1 - Redlegs vs. 9 Strong

After two and a half scoreless innings, the Redlegs put three on the board in the bottom of the thrid.  Hits by Trent Burford, Jackson Cornett, and Joel Norman loaded the bases.  Kyle Wilson earned a RBI the hard way by getting hit by a pitch, then Aaron Greiwe singled to knock in two runs.  9 Strong bounced back with two runs of their own by platting two runs in the top of the 4th, then tied the game at 3 with a single run in the top of the fifth.  With the time limit in play, the Redlegs ended the game by scoring 3 times:  again loading the bases, AJ Strassell and Jackson Cornett were both hit by pitches, and Cody Wilson worked a walk to round out the scoring in a 6-3 Redlegs victory.

Cornett started the game and pitched two scoreless innings; Norman followed with two innings; and Bill Bushelman pitched the fifth to earn the win.

Game 2 - Redlegs vs. Borden

Borden entered the day as the number one seed; these two teams played earlier in the season, resulting in a 4-4 tie.  This game wouldn't be as close.

The Redlegs blew the game wide open with an 11-run third inning, highlighted by a Jackson Cornett Grand Slam Home Run!  Bill Bushelman continued his hot streak on the mound with a complete game victory, pitching all five innings, allowing only one run and scattering 6 hits with 4 k's in the 12-1 final score.

Game 3 - Championship Game Redlegs vs. South Jet Bombers

With Bushelman still on the mound, the Redlegs started the game with a double from Cody Wilson and a RBI single from Kyle Wilson to take a 1-0 lead (Kyle Wilson sat out the second game due to illness, but came back in a big way).

The Bombers scored a run off Bushelman in the third, his final inning of work in heroic day from the senior at Milan High School.  The Bombers took a 2-1 lead in the 4th with a single run off reliever Eric Million.  However, the Redlegs battled back and took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 5th thanks to a two-run single from Trent Burford.

That lead didn't last long, as South Jet platted two runs off Aaron Greiwe in the bottom of the inning.  With the score 4-3 Bombers ahead, Million tied the game with a RBI double to knot the game at 4 heading into the final 7th inning.  Cody Wilson relieved Trent Burford on the mound and held the Bombers scoreless in the 6th.  That set the stage for Cody's cousin and Jennings County teammate Kyle Wilson.  With Cody and Joel Norman on base, Kyle belted a ball over the center-field fence to give the Redlegs a dramatic 7-4 lead.  But the Bombers still had to bat.

After Cody retired the first two batters, South Jet rallied:  first a triple, then a RBI single made the score 7-5.  Power hitting left-handed first baseman Trey suddenly became the tying run, and he didn't disappoint the Bombers - he drilled Wilson's pitch high and deep into right-center field, looking like a game-tying home run.  However, centerfieder Eric Million didn't give up on the play - leaping up aganist the fence, he didn't catch the ball, but he did manage to get his mitt over the fence and deflect it, the ball falling to the ground as the runner on first scored.  Right fielder Burford alertly picked the ball up and fired it to the infield, where the batter Trey was rounding second and heading to third.  Cody Wilson cut the throw and fired to third baseman Kyle Wilson, who applied the tag to end the game and claim the championship 7-6 for the Redlegs.

Burford was the winning pitcher, with Cody Wilson earning the save.  "There are so many  little things from so many players that make this win special," stated manager Jeff Greiwe.  "Jeff Cornett came in and coached this team, and his leadership was tremendous.  Kyle Wilson was so sick after the first game he almost went home, but stuck around and hit what turned out to be the game winning home run.  On Saturday, Eric Million participated in a cross-country meet and was forced to exit early with legs cramps and almost didn't play on Sunday.  His defense in all three games was outstanding, and if he doesn't get a glove on that last hit, it's a home run and a tie game.  Trent Burford had a huge two run single in the 5th, and he saved the game by picking up the ball and firing it into the infield to give us a chance to nail the runner at third.  Jackson Cornett and Joel Norman were outstanding all fall, and were our two best pitchers.  But they pitched in first game and counldn't pitch anymore.  The effort from Bill Bushelman was just outstanding, without his work on the mound we wouldn't have won anything!  And we can't forget AJ Strassell, who caught every inning in all 5 games these last two days.  Incredible baseball from all these outstanding young men!"
