3RD ANNUAL SOUTH PITTSBURGH STEELHEADS SHOWDOWN TOURNAMENT

The 3rd annual South Pittsburgh Steelheads Showdown tournament will take place on May 29-31, 2015 at North Strabane Municipal Park in Canonsburg, PA.  The age groups will be 9, 10, 11 , 12,  and 13.  (11s and 12s will either be separate or together depending on number of participants.)  This tournament is designed for mid-level AAU teams and Community A & B teams only.  The cost is $400, and we will take a maximum of 8 teams per age group.  The tournament has sold out the past 2 years, so make sure you register early.  Please contact Dave Hoffmann at 412-554-0149 or davepsufan@hotmail.com with any questions.

WHO WE ARE

The South Pittsburgh Steelheads is a travel baseball organization located in the Greater Pittsburgh area.  We stress the fundamentals (fielding, throwing mechanics, hitting), the mental aspects, and leadership.  In 2014, we participated in six 12U travel tournaments in and around Pittsburgh and in Ohio, making 3 semi-finals and winning 1 championship.  We also went to Cooperstown, NY for a week-long tournament from June 21-27.

We practice indoors at C-Side Sports (the premier indoor facility in the Pittsburgh area) in Canonsburg in the fall and winter.  We participate in an indoor wooden bat league at C-Side Sports in November and December.  We also provide some supplemental lessons, video analysis, scrimmages with other teams, and/or practices, and we bring in some other experts to work with the kids as well.  Once the weather improves, we practice outside at our home field, North Strabane Municipal Park, and participate in leagues and/or scrimmage other local teams leading up to tournament season.

OUR COACHES AND INSTRUCTORS

Dave Hoffmann (Manager/Founder) - Dave has managed the Steelheads for the past 2 seasons, and has coached multiple rec and travel teams in Peters Township for the past 6 years after 2 years in Bethel Park.  He played Division III baseball at Dickinson College in the early 1990s, where he was a pitcher and 4-year letterman.  He also played 20 years of competitive men's softball.

Chris Tekulve (Instructor) - Chris will be entering his second season as an instructor with the Steelheads.  Chris focuses on the areas of hitting and fielding for the team.  Chris played at Marietta College in the late 1990s, where he still holds several records.  He is 5th all time in RBI (199) and 3rd in doubles (51).  He is tied for an NCAA Division III record with 3 hits in 1 inning, and he is amongst the top NCAA performers all time with 10 RBI in 1 game. 

Chris Peters (Instructor) - Chris will be working with pitchers for the Steelheads.  He has been an individual instructor for many years, since concluding his major league career.  Chris was drafted by the Pirates in the 1993 MLB draft after playing Division I baseball at Indiana University.  He played 6 seasons in the major leagues between the Pirates and Expos.  He was a standout pitcher for the Pirates and a fixture in the starting rotation for several years.  He is also a former pitching coach at Point Park University.

Dave Sampson (Strength & Conditioning) - Dave has been a Sports Performance Coach for over 11 years and is working on strength and conditioning with the team this year.  He has worked with youth up to professional athletes in his career.  Dave was formerly a Sports Massage Therapist for the Pittsburgh Penguins.  He is certified with CMT, USAW, and NETA.

BATTLE FOR THE BURGH CHAMPIONS!

The Steelheads (plus a few) claimed our first tournament title in 2014 at the Battle for the Burgh at No Offseason Sports in Tarentum!   After finishing 2-1 in the round robin, we beat Steel City Select 9-6 in 7 innings in the semi-finals and then beat Pittsburgh Diamond Dawgs Gold 5-4 in the championship!  Way to go boys!
