2022 Tri-Point Playoffs
2022 Keystone Division Champions
The Pittsburgh Saints will be the first Tri-Point Football League Keystone Division Champions. Owner Sandy Tipton and Head Coach Mel Lewis lead one of the leagues “flagship” teams to the number two seed going into the playoffs. Along with home field advantage, the Saints will also have a bye week for the August 6th first round of the Inaugural Trip-Point Playoffs.
The Saints began the 2022 season by jumping straight into the fire in the preseason versus two outside-league powerhouses.. the Akron Pitbulls and the Erie Express. Although they ran that gauntlet without getting a win, they showed that they were maybe just a peace away against the Pitbulls and nearly walked away with a victory over the Express.
The Saints started into the regular season confident after the preseason gave them a glimpse of how good they could be. After the first few weeks Ms Tipton made an adjustment to the staff and promoted Savon Tipton to the Offensive Coordinator spot. They rolled through week 7 of the regular season with their only loss coming in week 2 versus the Gladiators. Week 8 had the Saints set to faced-off against the Greensburg Golden Hawks with both teams going into the game with a 6-1 record and the division title on the line. After a tough defensive game, the Saints came away with the win over their rival from down the highway. Pittsburgh finished the season with a 7-1 record and are set to play the Steel Valley Truth in the second round of the playoffs on August 13th.
“It’s a great accomplishment because of how we ended last season, but the goal for ’22 has not been accomplished yet.. and that’s getting to the championship” – Pittsburgh Saints owner, Sandy Tipton.

What is the Tri-Point Football League?
The Tri-Point Football League is an adult, full contact football league that has teams in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Tri-Point was founded in the fall of 2021 with the goal to provide competitive balance within our area. All of the league board members are also owners or representatives of teams within Tri-Point. Many of which have been long standing, established teams within the Ohio/PA semi-pro circle.
What is “semi-pro football”?
Semi-pro football is commonly called: “Developmental”,” Minor League Football”, “Amateur Football”, “Recreational football”, and sometimes “Free Football” (although that is extremely misinformed). Typically teams are formed as non-profit organizations. These organizations basically all have the same goal… to keep playing beyond what many assume is the last opportunity to play organized football. Rosters are made up of players with every level of experience. Some players may be climbing off the couch to get back into shape. Some may have aspirations of getting attention or film for college ball opportunities. Others are chasing the ultimate goal of a pro contract. Ultimately, they are all simply keeping their love of the game alive.
What exactly does “Tri-Point” mean?
As mentioned above, the Tri-Point Football League is made up of teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Those three states come together at a location along the Ohio River. Located at coordinates ( N 40° 38.367 W 080° 31.140 ). The tri-point of these three states was named the “Point of Beginning” in what would eventually be the starting point in a land survey west as our nation expanded in the 1700s.
We appreciate your interest in the Tri-Point Football League.
Sincerely,
Tri-Point Football Board
The Schedules are Out!
Just four days into the New Year, the Tri-Point Football League has released its regular season schedule. The season will kick-off on June 4th and continue into July with 8 games. The league will be broken down into two divisions for the 2022 season. Division 1 (name subject to change) will be made up entirely from teams in Pennsylvania. Division 2 (name subject to change) will be made up of the teams from Ohio and our lone team from West Virginia.
Division 1
Greensburg Golden Hawks
Pittsburgh Saints
Pittsburgh Seminoles
Western Pennsylvania Rough Riders
Monogahela Valley Sabers
Steel Valley Truth
Division 2
Cleveland Cobras
Ohio Gladiators
Ohio Bears
Marietta Bulldogs
Columbus Bredren Knights
West Virginia Black Knights
There looks to be several great games spread throughout the schedule including an interesting theme in weeks three and four. Both weeks will be solely inter-divisional play. Week 3 will see all of the Division 2 teams hosting Division 1 from Pennsylvania. Conversely, the WV and Ohio teams of Division 2 will travel to Division 1 in week 4. The regular season will come to a close on July 30th.
One of the structural pillars of the Tri-Point Football League is that all of the 12 teams will be in the playoffs. Seeding for the bracket will be based off of the regular season records and follow typical seeding procedures. Every game from week one thru week 8 will count due to everyone having a pre-punched ticket to the post season. No one wants to start the first round against a team that may have risen as a powerhouse. So every regular season win will be huge. The playoffs will begin on August 6th and crescendo with the Championship Game on August 27th.
A Quick Explanation of Preseason Games
Standard practice throughout this level of football is that teams typically are free to set up preseason games as they see fit. Preseason games can be scheduled anytime from late April thru the end of May. Teams may schedule opponents from other area leagues, which usually results in really good competition. Frequently you will see teams from the same league play each other in the preseason due to not having them on the schedule for the regular season or due to close proximity of their organizations. There is no standard amount of preseason games set by most leagues, but usually teams will play three or four.
Tri-Point Welcomes New Teams
While veteran teams are at the core of Tri-Point’s structure, some new and exciting teams will be competing too. The birth of four new area teams will be a big part of the league’s inaugural season. Teams often come and go quickly in the “semi-pro” world. It is a hurdle that many leagues and their teams face every year. With that being said, Tri-Point hopes to use its unique structure to help new teams to stabilize and become a perennial option for the young men in their communities to continue playing football. All four first year teams have owners and/or staff who have been a part of the “semi-pro” scene for many years. That fact makes the odds much higher for the new teams starting in Tri-Point this year. Let’s take a brief glimpse at these new teams.
WPA Rough Riders – Brownsville/Uniontown, Pennsylvania area
Owners – Jay Brooks and Voneric Cook
Head Coach – Jay Brooks
Game 1 – Hosting the Greensburg Golden Hawks
With so much talent in and around the Pittsburgh area, the Rough Riders look to tap into that deep pool. This season may ultimately prove that this area has the most talent on the board too. This past offseason seen two very talented Pitt area teams dissolve and fold. One of them being a yearly powerhouse in semi-pro rankings. If the Rough Riders take advantage of their location (equally between Pittsburgh and Morgantown) then they may be an exciting and surprising team to watch this season and into the playoffs.
Marietta Bulldogs – Marietta, Ohio
Owner and Head Coach - Gary Shelton
Game 1 – Traveling to the West Virginia Black Knights
There seems to be a team in pretty much every medium-sized to big city all over Ohio. The Bulldogs may have decided to set up shop in the one area without one. There is a ton of talent along the Ohio River Valley and close proximity to Parkersburg, WV will be a blessing. That’s not to say the untapped talent from small towns in the Marietta area, like Caldwell should be ignored. Like every square inch of the tri-state area, guys down there are hungry to keep playing the game we all love. Will that hunger fuel the Bulldogs to a deep playoff run?
Bredren Knights – Columbus, Ohio
Owner and Head Coach – LaWon Sellers
Game 1 – Traveling to the Ohio Bears
Columbus, Ohio has a deep history of talented semi-pro teams over recent years. Ohio’s capitol is not only one of the largest cities in Ohio, but also home to Ohio’s most dedicated football fanbase. What better way to start up a new team and cement it for the future than to plop yourself down right in the middle of it. The Bredren Knights did just that. They started out the right way too. The Knights began an early push this fall to recruit and they seem to have garnered a lot of attention from prospective players in their area. It will be hard not to succeed in such a talented area and with drive to find talent that the Knights are showing thus far... there is no reason Columbus can’t provide another championship level team.
Ohio Bears – Whitehall, Ohio
Owner and Head Coach – Buddy Williams
Owner – Demone Gore
Owner – Noah Prentiss
Game 1 – Hosting the Columbus Bredren Knights
Much like the Knights, the Bears will be pulling talent from the Columbus area. Rather than the hustle and bustle of being right in the mix, the Bears have an opportunity to tap into the heavily talented suburbs east of town. From Gahanna to Zanesville there is a ton of talented players looking for a shot to get on the field. That is not to say that the Bears won’t be drawing from the capitol as well. The Bears may even become winners off the field as well as on with mentions of community involvement for the organization. Community interaction is a great way to help your area while also bringing awareness of the opportunity to play football. The Bears just might set themselves up for success while helping their community do the same.
“New teams always carry risks, but even well established, prospective championship teams fold after winning rings. Our new guys all have experienced guys on board and our league board members plans to help support those teams with advice and help if they need it. That was part of the plan when we began brainstorming the structure of Tri-Point’s organization” - Doug Horning (GM of the Ohio Gladiators)
