WHS Girls Water Polo States Competition Recap by Ali Valentine

Wiss GWAPO

Rounding out an incredible winning run, the Wissahickon girls water polo team, coached by Greg Beyer, Chadd Crump, and Jake Berring, moved into the post-season State Championships as co-Championships of the Eastern Conference (10-1 record) and co-Champions of Suburban One League (9-1 record). At the beginning of November eight talented teams from Pennsylvania converged on North Penn High School for a weekend of dedicated time in the pool.

First up on Friday night, the third seed Wissahickon Trojans took on the sixth seed Tigers from North Allegheny. Johnson won all four swim offs giving the Trojans initial advantage each quarter. Trading goals, teams went into halftime tied at 6-6. The back and forth battle continued throughout the second half with the Tigers finding themselves in foul trouble. The Trojans drew ten kick-outs in the game - six from Valentine. Heading into the final minute, the Trojans were ahead 9-8 which did not change as the final whistle blew. Alberti had a stellar game defending the hole and making two saves in front of the cage, forcing the Tigers to primarily take outside shots. Trojans goalie, Benning, had 18 saves on the night. Valentine led the goal charge with four; Krieger and Lovensheimer had two apiece; Staub had one. Four assists came from Lovensheimer with Benning, Krieger, Valentine, and Johnson having one each. Staub led the steal count with three; Valentine had two; Krieger and Alberti one apiece. With the victory, the Trojans moved into Saturday knowing they would now clinch a top four spot.

The Saturday morning semi-final game would be the Trojans’ biggest challenge of the tournament, taking on the Maidens of North Penn, state champs for the last five years, hungry to avenge their in-season loss to Wissahickon. Though the first quarter ended with the Trojans up 2-1, the Maidens rallied to a 4-2 lead at the half. Unfortunately, the Trojans could not recover from that goalless quarter and ran into foul trouble in the second half, ending the game with a 6-12 loss. Lovensheimer led the goal tally with three; Valentine, Staub, and Johnson each had one. Assists came from Lovensheimer, Valentine, Staub, and Garvey. The Trojans had a good number of steals in the game from Krieger, Alberti, Lovensheimer, Valentine, Staub, Garvey, and Benning -the latter also making 19 saves in the cage.

The morning loss led to an evening match up against the Wilson Bulldogs, last year’s States runner-up, to determine the bronze medal position. At the half, the Bulldogs had a single goal advantage with a great defensive effort by both teams allowing only a 3-2 scoreline. However, the Trojans had a third quarter surge and headed into the final seven minutes ahead 6-3, scoring quickly at the beginning of the fourth. The Trojans defensive presence throughout but particularly in the second half – 14 saves in the game by Benning as well as a block by Staub, along with multiple steals by Alberti, Benning, and Valentine - allowed the Bulldogs to score only once, leading the Trojans to a 7-4 victory, clinching the bronze medal – the best result in program history. Lovensheimer once again led the scorers with three goals; Krieger had two; Valentine and Johnson had one apiece. Assists came from Benning, Krieger, Valentine, and Staub.

Wissahickon Girls Water Polo Head Coach, Greg Beyer, was recognized as co-Coach of the Year, taking the Trojans from a seventh place finish at States last season (their first States appearance in almost ten years) to third place this year. Additionally, seven players earned post-season recognition:

Sr. Anna Alberti – 2nd Team All State, 1st Team All Conference, 2nd Team All League

Sr. Chloe Lovensheimer – HM All State, 2nd Team All Conference, HM All League

Sr. Jaclyn Staub – 3rd Team All Conference, HM All League

Jr. Paige Benning – HM All State, 2nd Team All Conference, 1st Team All League
