I am not to fond of the guy over the middle. I think he was put there a long time ago to either get more guys into the game or protect the pitcher? I think this league has come a long way since those days and this position should be eliminated. Any one agree?

I agree, get rid of the over the middle guy. That should shoot my average right up over the .300 mark this year!

I have trouble understanding the concept of protecting the pitcher with a man over the middle. I suppose it is meant to dissuade guys from shooting the middle but how many players in this league really have such control of their swings that they can prevent it?

Exactly right Ryno....the man over the middle is to dissuade guys from shooting up the middle and possibly killing the pitcher, by putting the guy up the middle the general thinking is that it will make guys hit elsewhere.

ASA has implemented new rules in many of their leagues by chalk-lining a circle around a pitcher and if the ball is hit anywhere within the confines of that cirle it is an automatic out, this keeps guys from shooting the middle. On softball 360 radio there is a pretty good discussion about this exact subject. I think you can still listen to it on Softball360.com

Artie the only middle you have seen in 10 years is the middle of a cheeseburger.

Lemdawg, you may be one of the few guys who can actually shoot the middle without shooting the pitcher, as someone pointed out most guys can't do that. I really have no opinion really on the matter other than it doesn't bother me either way.

When I read this post 4 years ago, I would have said there is no reason to get rid of the over the middle guy. It keeps pitchers safe, gives another player a chance to play, and keeps offense down a bit. After playing a few games with DelPadre over the middle- I would agree- eliminate the position.

Middle guy stays! But, he has to keep his feet in the infield dirt. Middle guy takes away a few hits..a few ..and helps to turn double plays. Which makes the games faster. There are like three teams in this league that have a good enough keystone combo to turn two regularly...I dont know if I have ever seen TomC hit a grounder..its always bullets, lasers and bombs. The middle guy helps relay the ball in for him....and, like lemme said, even in tournaments many teams play three man OF and to get a guy over the middle. The key is not to let the MI roam. And shit, our Middle guy is Considine. He might as well be invisible. trust uses delpadre..really, its not like every team has a GT locking the middle down. Middle Stays!
