| For those who may think differently or those who may not know at all, it is NOT true that a batter who runs through first base must turn to their right. The runner can actually turn back to the base in either direction (Right or Left). The key is not which way the runner turns, but when they turned did they make an effort to advance to the next base.
One step toward second could be considered an attempt to advance before the runner changes their mind and heads back to first. In this situation, if the runner is tagged before getting back to first, they would be out.
A runner who runs through first base and turns either left or right without making an effort to go to second, then walks back to first is not out when touched with the ball. Therefore, the belief that a runner must always turn to their right or be out when touched with the ball is nothing more than an old backyard tactic and does not hold true in the real games of baseball and softball.
