Bowser Steals Victory Over Day Toyota
By Mark Kaboly
Its defense was shoddy, the hitting was sporadic and the baserunning was downright atrocious. But there’s a reason why Bowser has won six of the past seven Daily News League championships — it finds ways to win. An Day Toyota relay throw from shallow right field sailed over the head of third baseman Carmen Congelio in the eighth inning, turning Jack Shaffer’s triple into the game-winning run as Bowser came away with a hard-fought 6-5 win over Day Toyota at Beeddle Park. The loss dropped expansion Day Toyota to 0-3. Mike Finocchi picked up the win for Bowser. He was dominant over the final three innings. He struck out five and allowed only one hit. Starting pitcher Marty Neidham, making his DNL debut, gave up five unearned runs and walked six in 5 1/3 innings, but did walk six. “There are a lot of positives to take out of this game,” said Frank Szubra, who also doubles as Day Toyota’s co-manager. “It was a hard-fought game on our part. I am not all that disappointed.” Finocchi, hitting the low 90s on the radar gun, struck out the final two of the game to win it for Bowser. The 2-1 Twins got a double, single and two RBI from Jim Onder and two hits from both Kyle Lucot and Shaffer. Day Toyota's other co-manager Matt Westwood went 3 for 4 with a RBI.
