Bowser Moves Into First Place Over Quinn Construction

By JUSTIN CRIADO

Ben Whitmore used his second complete game of the season to lead Bowser into first place in the Daily News League on Monday night with a 7-5, come-from-behind win over Quinn Construction. Whitmore, who moved to 3-0, helped Bowser deal the Mudcats their first loss. “It’s a good baseball win between two good teams,” Bowser manager Andy Brettschnider said. “I think we’re probably the best two (teams) in the league right now.” After trading first-inning runs, Sam Weightman’s three-run double in the third gave Quinn Construction (4-1) an early 4-1 lead.
Pitcher Dan Laird blanked Bowser (5-1) the next three innings before reliever Alex Edgar entered in the fifth. “We’re an older team that knows how to play baseball,” Brettschnider said. “You have off innings, and you have to work through those off innings to be able to win a ball game.”
The Twins began to chip away when Steel Valley’s Brian Grise reached on an error. After singles from South Park’s Kyle Lucot and Duquesne’s Mike Carrol, Bowser cut the deficit to one heading into the sixth. Chris Miller’s sacrifice fly in the top of the inning gave Quinn another two-run cushion, but Bowser responded with 4 in the bottom half. After two walks and a throwing error, Lucot singled to center with the eventual game-winning RBI. Mike Carrol added an RBI single in the sixth. “They had some timely hitting in the first half of the game; we had some in the second half,” Brettschnider said. “We just had a little more in the second than they did in the first half.” Whitmore found his rhythm as the game went on thanks to his changeup. “My curveball was off until those last couple innings so I had to find something that could work,” he said. Whitmore allowed five runs and seven hits while striking out four and walking four. Lucot finished 2 for 4 with three RBI. Carrol was 2 for 4 with two singles and a RBI. “To us, everyone’s looking out to get us, so it’s not anything spectacular,” Brettschnider said of being in first. “But it’s nice to be up there.” Bowser plays at 6 p.m. Thursday against Klingensmith Insurance (4-1-1). Quinn Construction plays at 6 p.m. Friday vs. Century 3 Chevrolet.
