Bowser Bangs Out 11 Hits In Win Over Clancy's

Bowser’s Andy Brettschneider mixed up the top of the batting order following last week’s upset loss to Harvey Wilner’s Tavern that he wasn’t able to attend, and Bowser responded with one of its best offensive outputs of the season against one of the DNL’s best pitchers. Bowser (11-3) banged out 11 hits as the Twins climbed within percentage points of league-leading Quinn Construction (10-2) with a 7-3 victory over Clancy’s (8-5) at Clairton Park. “It is nice to have somebody here who knows what’s going on,” Brettschneider said with a laugh. “But seriously, I mixed up the lineup a little bit at the top and the guys responded. It worked out well.” Brettschneider moved Dalaine Ofchinick from fourth to leadoff and shifted leadoff hitter Brian Grise to second, and it paid off for the Twins. Ofchinick went 3-for-4 with an RBI, double and two runs scored, while Grise added two hits and three RBI. Kyle Lucot and Dan Lippert added two hits each to keep rookie left-handed hurler Ben Weidemer perfect on the season. Weidemer, a Central Catholic graduate who plays at Point Park University, improved to 5-0 as he went six inning, scattering nine hits and giving up three runs while striking out five. Mike Finocchi needed only 10 pitches to retire Clancy’s in the bottom of the seventh as he struck out two. “I was a little antsy a couple innings early on,” Weidemer said. “They were on my fastball so I started throwing changeups. It seemed to work.” Weidemer allowed three hits over the final three innings after a rocky start in which he gave up a two-run homer to Mike Pezzone in third to give Clancy’s a 3-2 lead. “He has been fantastic all year for us,” Brettschneider said. “He came through again today when he needed to. He settled down when he had to and performed well.” Trailing 3-2 in the fifth, Bowser finally broke out against starter Chris Douglas. Lippert and Lucot started the inning with singles before Ofchnick’s grounder fielder’s choice loaded the bases with no outs. Grise singled in a pair followed, Ofchinick scored on a passed ball and Jim Klausik double in another to give Bowser a 6-3 lead. Grise added another RBI in the sixth for some insurance. “We didn’t have the right mindset from the start,” Clancy’s coach Lou Kammermeier said. “We had two guys who didn’t show up with jerseys, we had guys worried about arguing with the umpires in the first inning. “When you don’t come ready to play and you face good pitchers that’s what’s going to happen.” Clancy’s got two hits from Ryan Dixon and Brandon Ditmar and two RBI from Pezzone. “It’s good to win against a good team like this,” Brettschneider said. “It’s another win against a quality opponent. We are keeping things moving, hovering around the top.”
