Championship teams are defined not by their scorers, or their shutdown defenders, or their formidable inside game, or lights out three point shooters, or flashy quick guards, and, contrary to popular myth, not by Arnel (?). Championship teams are made and/or unmade with the 8th man. Let’s look at league’s history: the powerful UP team (the last repeating champ) first had Joel v then Leo as their 8th men in consecutive seasons. DJ Ed, the perennial 8th man has been on countless championship teams as the 8th man, the big difference maker. Merick won a championship as the most coveted 8th man in league history. And now the current season 7 UP has Ron, the 8th of all 8ths. 7Up hasn’t lost a game with him on the lineup and would likely win the crown because, of their, not despite of, 8th man. Oh, the 8th man, before a position of just-serviceable-replacement players, now a position of power. The 8th man is arguably the most controversial part of every season’s draft! One famous rule came out from the use of the 8th man (Eusebio rule). So either rely heavily on your 8th man, or do what Ginebra did last season. Either way, the 8th man has become an influential force in the league. Enjoy the postseason! |
