STATE FINALS RECAP - IHSAA.ORG
2009-10 Class 2A State Finals Recap
Chelsea Jones scored 4 of her game-high 23 points in a back-and-forth overtime session to lead the No. 2 Austin Lady Eagles to their first girls basketball state championship, a 70-65 victory over Fort Wayne Bishop Luers in the Class 2A title game.
Jones was part of a balanced attack that saw three players score in double figures, including 19 points from senior guard Katy McIntosh and 18 from senior forward Michelle Goodin. The trio helped
It was Bishop Luers that jumped out to an early 14-10 advantage, led by six first-quarter points from sophomore forward Brooke Ridley, but the Lady Eagles battled back to take a 29-26 halftime lead.
Although
The extra session saw both teams start out hot, but Jones and McIntosh went a combined 3-for-3 from the field to give the Lady Eagles and head coach Jared Petersen the push they needed to finish their state championship season with a 26-2 record.
For Fort Wayne Luers, the contest marked just the second time the team has lost in seven state finals appearances; Denny Renier’s team finishes the year with an 18-8 record. Woods led the Lady Knights with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while Young finished with 12 points and 4 assists.
Austin Head Coach Jared Petersen
“I’m just trying to take it all in right now. I’m a little speechless, it’s a feeling I can’t describe. To be with these girls since they were freshmen, they were kind of thrown to the fire. And now as seniors to get over that hump is an unbelievable feeling.”
“We’ve had this goal since they were freshmen. Early on, we were blocked by Heritage Christian. This was our goal to achieve before they graduated. I hate to lose them but what a way to go out.”
On shot selection
“These four seniors have been here before and I trust them. They have the green light. I don’t tell kids not to shoot because that’s when you mess with a kid’s confidence.”
On trying to rebound against a larger Luers team
“We didn’t have the size to match up with them. We hoped to get them into a fast-paced game. We had no answer for their rebounding.”
On the 4th quarter start
“I knew the charge was coming. I told the kids they (Luers) are not gonna quit-they’re gonna come and make a run. After they took the lead, we were finally able to get some stops. Stops are something we’ve preached on for years in that we gotta get some stops in the man-to-man defense. At some time in your career, we’ve gotta get some big stops to make a difference. Tonight we got the stops we needed to get into overtime.”
Fort Wayne Bishop Luers Head Coach Denny Renier
“
“I’ve never come close to a year like this at Luers in terms of having injuries and the accident. And have all the things happen to these kids and get to the state finals and battle a good team to the end -- you have to be proud of them.”
“In the first half, McIntosh (13 points) and Jones (11 points) hurt us a lot. We played pretty well even though we are not a high-powered offense. We got inside to Miracle (Woods) a lot in the second half and they had trouble defending her. But we missed some easy shots.”
“To be down nine points at the end of the third quarter and to come back and take the lead says a lot about our kids. (In the comeback) we went inside and Brierra (Young) hit some big three’s. But we’ve been doing that all year. But again, we just didn’t have enough gas at the end.”
“They kind of fooled us at the end of regulation. They showed us zone and went man to man, and we didn’t get a good shot off.”

Lady Eagles Win State Title - Louisville Courier Journal - by Justin Sokeland
The No. 2 Eagles (26-2) made the long journey to
They nearly failed to make the finish line, blowing a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter. But a clutch three-point play by senior guard Katy McIntosh forced the extra period, and Chelsea Jones had two overtime baskets that capped her 23-point day and finally wore down the Knights (18-8).
“This is the best feeling in the world, to bring it home,” Jones said. “I'm a state champion.”
McIntosh, the school's career scoring leader, also won the Mental Attitude Award, joining 1985 Miss Basketball Jodie Whitaker as the second player in school history to earn that honor.
Austin started the fourth quarter with a 49-40 lead but got too eager to kill time, allowing the Knights to pull even at 54-54 with Hilary Watts' three-pointer. Another
McIntosh had the answer, scoring from the paint and drawing a foul with 38.8 seconds left. Her free throw forged the 59-59 deadlock that forced overtime.
“That was an amazing basketball play,”
“It's hard to say how we feel, to accomplish this and make history,” Petersen said. “You're at a loss for words. It's an unbelievable feeling to finally get it done, to be able to finish with a state championship.”
Eagles withstood that physical disadvantage with quickness and perimeter shooting as Jones and Jessie Davidson hit three-pointers for a 45-36 lead.
Michelle Goodin's three-point play capped the third quarter with a 49-40 edge. But when the Eagles attempted to spread the floor and slow down the pace, the Knights scrambled back. Miracle Woods, a 6-foot sophomore, scored four times from the low post, setting up the
“I knew the charge was coming,” Petersen said. “They weren't going to quit, so we had to weather the storm and hope we had enough gas to win this thing at the end.”
Woods finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds, Brooke Ridley added 15 points and Young added 12. Luers, which beat
“We've been in a lot of games like this,” Luers coach Denny Renier said. “Sometimes you don't win them. It wasn't a lack of anything. It's the fact we played a good team that made plays when they had to. They start four seniors, and at times that showed.”
McIntosh finished with 19 points and Goodin added 18. Jones hit five three-pointers, one shy of the state finals record.

Shooting the Lady Eagles with Photographer Larry Joe DeWitt
(Photographer Larry Joe DeWitt has taken thousands of pictures of the Austin Lady Eagles during the last two seasons. In this column Larry shares his thoughts with us on the Lady Eagles State Championship.)
In every wedding ceremony I perform, one of the prayers for the bride and groom contains this line: “I pray for the fulfillment of every good dream.” Nearly two weeks out from the Austin Lady Eagles state tournament victory, as I sit here looking at my ticket stub, lots of “good dreams” were fulfilled (and probably as many prayers as well,) were answered!
What a great run it has been for Austin’s Lady Eagles Basketball team. While I don’t have all of the statistics to give you, there is one thing I know: I’ve been watching high school basketball for as long as I can remember, and must admit that this has been a great team to watch! You see, I’ve watched the last two years through the lens of my Nikon camera and have taken literally thousands of photographs of these young women playing basketball. I have become friends with many of them along the way. It has been a privilege for me to be on the floor of almost every game, and watch these ladies go through the struggles of life and being a team and watch them as the sheer emotions of years of work paid off by them winning a state championship. I’ve seen injuries, anger, tears, laughter and uncontrollable joy. Through the lens of my camera, I’ve captured scenes that I’ll never forget and will always have available to view. I have watched a team experience the emotions of life together and go beyond “normal” to achieve greatness.
It’s critically important to remember that there’s been so much more than just basketball going on with this team for years. The lessons that this team has learned on and off the court will serve them throughout the remainder of their lives and will certainly serve as a springboard to success in life for many of them. The setting of goals, the years of practice and sacrifice while others are out doing what they please and finally, the realization of the ultimate reward in Indiana High School Basketball…a STATE CHAMPIONSHIP along with all the benefits that accompany that title is now no longer a dream for the Austin Lady Eagles!
As a graduate of Austin High School, it has been a great experience to watch the school have pride in this team and it has been equally rewarding to watch as the entire town of Austin and Scott County support this team. We live in difficult times. The economy is tough, life is tough, and schools are fighting on all sides to educate our children and people need a rallying point. This year, that rallying point was the Austin Lady Eagles! It’s been a trip of unification for our school and community to watch this team play and capture the State title!
Before I close I want to thank everyone involved with the Lady Eagles’ program. None of this would be possible without dedicated Administrators, Teachers, Coaches, Students, and of course, those basketball parents who it seems live and breathe with every beat of the ball! For years, there has been a legacy at Austin High School with basketball…and the legacy continues. For all of you who aspire to someday wear the uniform of a Lady Eagle, there are lessons to be learned from this team. Goals, hard work, being team players, and never giving up on “the fulfillment of every good dream” are just a few. Thanks for allowing me and so many others to be a part of history! May God Bless you richly in all you do!!
Larry Joe
