What is the Challenger division:
The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League to enable everyone with physical and mental challenges to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide. Teams are set up according to abilities, rather than age, and can include as many as 15-20 players. Challenger games can be played as tee ball games, coach pitch, player pitch, or a combination of the three.
Playing the Game:
Two divisions of Challenger Baseball: Senior League – ages 15-up Junior League – ages 5-18 (22 if still enrolled in school). All games will be played on the Helen Kelly Field, located on Elm and Vine Street in Greenwood Lake NY. All games will be played on Saturday 1:15 pm with possible weekday practice day to be decided once program starts.
Challenger Baseball is played to the player’s abilities. The Challenger players wear the same uniforms and safety equipment as other Little League players. As this is the first year we would be doing this we are starting here in Greenwood Lake and potentially span out next year.
All games are non-competitive, no scores or statistics are recorded. Every player on a team bats and plays in the field each inning with help from coaches and buddies (typical developing peers) as necessary. A typical game lasts two to three innings, usually one hour only and depending on the number of players and the weather. Players hit from the tee or are pitched to by the coaches, depending on the child’s skill level. A T-ball baseball is used for safety purposes.
One of the benefits of having a Challenger Division is that it encourages the use of "buddies" for the Challenger players. The buddies assist the Challenger players on the field and encourage the players to bat and make plays themselves. However, the buddy is always nearby to help when needed
