You Never Know Who Is Watching

If you think that college coaches and professional scouts do not notice the “little things” you are mistaken. As one coach told me …. “We have to pay attention to each of the intangibles;  it is the only real separator between some of these guys.” He went on to explain that each recruiting year they will have several players on their board that are essentially equal in athletic skills and ability. What then makes the difference is the “Little Things.”

So the next time you think that it doesn’t matter how you hustle or present yourself maybe you should revisit that part of your game. As another coach told me … “A player can hustle and give his maximum effort even on a day when he and/or his team is not playing their best game. It doesn’t take any athletic ability to hustle.”

Respect the game. 

Most coaches at the high school & college level have a great respect for the game. You should too. That means...

a. NEVER wear your hat on backwards.
b. Wear your uniform correctly.
c. Take care of your equipment.
d. Never walk on a field. Always run or jog on and off the field.

Don’t have facial hair, long hair or wear earrings. In college baseball, one bad apple or player who doesn’t fit in can do a lot of damage to the team. College coaches are going to be looking hard at a player’s character to make sure they fit in with the team.

NCAA Division I

• 11.7 full scholarships
• Scholarship monies can be divided
• Full scholarships are very rare
• Some lower level Division I schools do not fully fund all 11.7 scholarships
• Blending of athletic and academic scholarship monies is permissible

NCAA Division II

• 9 full scholarships
• Scholarship monies can be divided
• Full scholarships are very rare
• Many DII programs do not fund all 9 scholarships
• Blending of athletic and academic scholarship monies is permissible

NCAA Division III

• 0 athletic scholarships available
• Many Division III schools do a very good job of finding the players academic and other aid funding

NAIA

• 12 full scholarships
• Scholarship monies can be divided
• Some NAIA programs don’t fund the 12 scholarships
• Blending of athletic and academic scholarship monies is permissible

NJCAA Division I

• 24 full scholarships including tuition, room and board books and fees
• Blending of athletic and academic scholarship monies is permissible

NJCAA Division II

• 24 scholarships including tuition and books.  No room and board or fees.
• Blending of athletic and academic scholarship monies is permissible

NJCAA Division III

• 0 athletic scholarships
• These programs are able to field very competitive teams because they are typically very inexpensive to attend

Official Offers:

• A 50% offer is considered a “good offer”
• Most Scholarship money goes to “up the middle” players (Pitchers, Catchers, SS/2B and Centerfielders)
• Two way players generally receive the highest offers
• Know what the offer covers– full tuition, books, room and board, student fees, etc.
