Waltham Youth Basketball Association Code of Conduct

Rules of conduct have been established to help maintain order, reinforce strong values and attitudes, and to help promote good sportsmanship among all participants and spectators, and create an atmosphere that will provide the best possible experience for all participants and spectators.

Participation in YBA as a team, a player, a coach or spectator indicates a willingness to comply with the policies and rules as set forth by YBA. It shall be further understood that YBA retains the right to take disciplinary action against anyone whose conduct or actions it judges to be obnoxious or unsportsmanlike, or who engages in any type of unacceptable activity which causes disruption, or hinders the safe operation of the association. This disciplinary action may include suspension, probation and /or expulsion.

The following are some types of conduct and activities that would be considered unacceptable, disruptive and detrimental. The list is not intended to be all-inclusive:

- Inappropriate language or gestures
- Use of profanity
- Verbal abuse
- Taunting
- Threats of violence
- Fighting
- Vandalism
- Failure to comply with a reasonable request from a YBA director
- Trespassing into closed areas of the school

Any spectator in violation of the rules of conduct will be asked to leave the gym and may not be allowed to return for the remainder of the season.

Any player who violates the rules of conduct will be subject to at least a one game suspension. A second offense will immediately place the player on probation for the remainder of the season. The school principal will be notified of the incident.

Any further incidents while on probation will result in further disciplinary action, including expulsion from the league.
All decisions by YBA will be final.

All coaches are responsible for the conduct of their team players and should encourage the highest standard of conduct and sportsmanship among all team players. Coaches are also reminded that under basketball rules they are not only responsible for the conduct of their team, but the conduct and the control of their spectators.

Guidelines and Code of Conduct for Parents
As a parent, you play a special role in contributing to the needs and development of your son. Through your encouragement and good example, you can help assure that all the players learn good sportsmanship and self-discipline. In basketball, young players learn to work together, to sacrifice for the good of the team, to enjoy winning and deal appropriately with defeat, all while becoming physically fit and healthy. Best of all, they have fun!

Support your son by giving encouragement and showing interest in his team is very important. Help your son work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your son that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory - that way your son will always be a winner despite the outcome of the game!

Always Be Positive. Parents serve as role models for their son. Become aware of this and work to be a positive role model. Applaud good plays by your son's team as well as good plays by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sports activities.

Remember that your son is the basketball player, not you. It's very important to let players establish their own goals - to play the game for themselves. Take care not to impose your own standards and goals on them. Don't put too heavy a burden on your son to win games.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to help your son achieve his goals and his natural fear of failure. Nobody likes to make mistakes. If your son does make one, remember it's all part of learning, so encourage your son's efforts and point out the good things that your son has accomplished.

Your coaching from the sidelines may be counterproductive to the coach's methodology. That means refraining from coaching or refereeing from the stands. Yelling at referees and players only creates problems for the players on the court and the organization as a whole. There will be no tolerance for yelling at players, officials, or coaches.

Enjoy the game!
