Twice As Nice - 7th Grade Adds Another National Championship

July 31, 2010
The Florida Phenoms 7th grade team earned their second national championship of the season at the Youth Basketball of America (YBOA) Division 2 National Championship Tournament in Kissimmee, Florida held July 25-31. The Phenoms previously won their first national trophy at the USSSA D2 Nationals in Cocoa Beach, Florida in early July.

With an inspiring opening ceremonies featuring over 200 teams from around the country, the Florida Phenoms were set to compete against 16 of the top 13U teams in the nation. The Phenoms opened pool play against a fiery Tennessee Edge team. Despite keeping a lead throughout the game, the Phenoms were plagued by sluggish play and turnovers. The Edge came roaring back late in the fourth quarter and stole the game 56-59. Despite their disappointment, the team used the early loss as motivation for the remaining pool play games, as the Phenoms stepped up their game with victories over the Georgia Jaguars 61-52 and the Low Country Marlins from South Carolina 54-40. The powerful Phenom post game, led by JT Marshall, Brendan White, and Jack Derovanesian, was too much for the opposition.

To begin bracket play, the 7th grade Phenoms were matched with Team Vandy from Tennessee. With their title hopes on the line, the Phenoms responded with a 65-57 victory. In quarterfinal action, the Phenoms dismantled the Plant City Panthers 57-52. The Orlando Hoopsters were the next team to fall victim to the surging Phenoms. Led by long range sharp-shooter Garrett Cioffi and defensive stallwart Antonio Wells, a close game gave way to the Phenoms trademark third quarter run; leading to a 56-38 victory.

The championship final was set with the Phenoms to face Houma Elite from Louisiana. With the two teams neck and neck at the end of the first quarter, the Phenoms superb team effort blew the game wide open. Slashing guard James Brunson weaved through defenders, while forward Rodney Hunter crashed the boards. Super-sub Isaac Tiburcio knocked down two three pointers while guard/forward Dante Hoppa added another. And once again the big-man duo of JT Marshall and Brendan White devastated the opposition, putting on a textbook display of low post moves. Between the stifling team defense and balanced scoring, the Phenoms soared to victory 57-40 and captured their second national title.

In addition to the team title, a few Phenoms received individual recognition. Rodney Hunter and Brendan White were named to the all tournament team. They were joined by James Brunson who was awarded the coveted Hustle Award and J.T. Marshall who was recognized as the National Championship Most Valuable Player. In addition, Dante Hoppa received the YBOA Student Athlete Award and the Phenoms also won second place in the team banner contest. This closes out the most successful season ever for the founding team members of the Phenoms organization.
