dicens ite in mente, dicens non in corpore
translates (loosely) to
the mind says go, the body says no!
Throughout this web site you will find references to the spirit of Pittstown FC. Here's our story and an explanation of what that spirit means...
Ancient History
During 2006 and 2007, a group of adults - mostly coaches - began playing pickup games at Finn Road Park on Sunday afternoons. These games were strictly fun and all were welcome to partake. We played year round whenever the weather would cooperate. There were no winners or losers. Just good fun. Our Sunday pickups continue in this vein to this day.
Radical Concept
In January 2008, with a sense that there was enough interest among those playing pickup, (now) Commissioner Chip sent an email to (now) Commissioner Jens suggesting that we form a team to compete in the Tri-County Soccer League. The subject of that email read "Radical Concept". Word spread quickly, interest grew and about 12 weeks later the Herd took the field in the Tri-County Over 40-B league.
The first year wasn't kind to the Herd. Our record was 0-11-1. And the injuries mounted at a fantastic pace as each week passed. We did however savor our one tie and some great memories of struggling short-handed through games, kicking balls into the river to buy time, but always having fun and enjoying a good laugh after the game.
Year two was a bit better and we actually started off the season with a win. But plenty of losses were to follow. What also was happening is that our numbers were growing and by midway through the season we had a roster of nearly 40 players (which was almost enough considering how busy everyone was and how many injuries we had). There obviously was a lot of pent up demand for an adult recreational league in Hunterdon County. So the Herd continued having fun and enjoying a good laugh after the game.
By the end of the second season we numbered about 45 players on the team and reflecting in the post-season there was a general distaste over our Tri-County competition: too many poor sports, way too much bad mouthing going on (mostly within those teams), so the idea of splitting off and forming our own league was born.
PFC Today
Since 2010, Pittstown FC has been an intramural league of men and women roughly ages 30-70. We are a league of individual players that are assigned teams at the start of the season. Each week our teams compete concurrently at Finn Road Park and after each game many of our players join together to celebrate another week of football. We do get competitive on the field, at times things get a bit intense and cards are handed out. But we always have fun and enjoy a good laugh after the game.
The spirit of Pittstown FC is one of camaraderie, good sportsmanship, and recognizing that winning is much more about playing the game than a final score.
We believe and embrace that football brings people together crossing boundaries of age, gender, race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, skill and ability. Pittstown FC strives to be inclusive in every respect.
All Pittstown FC players are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that honors this spirit.
