What is the Chippewa Valley Girls Hockey Association (CVGHA)?
CVGHA is a Wisconsin Amateur Hockey Association (WAHA) registered girls’ hockey association, which is independent of the Eau Claire and Altoona Youth Hockey Associations. Our goal is not only to offer the opportunity for girls to play hockey, but also to encourage the development of confidence, leadership, community, wellness, and other lifelong skills on and off the ice.

I live in Altoona. Can my daughter play?
Yes! CVGHA welcomes girls from Eau Claire, Altoona, Fall Creek, Augusta, and the surrounding area.
What age girls are eligible to play?
Girls ages 7-14 are eligible to join.
Is there just one girls team?
No, there are currently three teams made up of nine and ten-year old girls (U10), eleven and twelve-year old girls (U12), and thirteen and fourteen-year old girls (U14). If we get enough girls registered, we would add a U8 team (seven and eight-year old girls).
What happens if there aren’t enough girls for a team?
If CVGHA doesn’t have enough girls for our own team, we form a cooperative with Chippewa Falls and Menomonie.
My daughter has never skated before. Can she still play?
Yes, absolutely! We recommend your daughter practice skating as much as possible to improve her skills.
When do I register my daughter for a team?
Registration is in September and is announced on our Facebook page and via email. Please like our Facebook page and sign up for our mailing list!

How long is the season?
The season runs from November 1 to early March.
When and where are practices?
There are two practices per week. Practices are in Eau Claire and Altoona. If we form a cooperative with Chippewa Falls and Menomonie, there will also be practices in those locations.
When are the games?
Games are on Saturdays and Sundays. There may be an occasional Friday night game at a tournament. The teams play 30-35 games per season, which includes three tournaments. Each player is responsible for the cost of their own travel.
I don’t know anything about hockey. What gear does my daughter need?
Please have a helmet, mouth guard, chest protector, elbow pads, pelvic protector, breezers, knee pads, shin guards, long socks, skates, and a stick. Some families buy new gear and some buy used gear.
How much does it cost?
For the 2018-2019 season, the cost is $400 for U10, $600 for U12, and $800 for U14. The cost may vary each year based on the success of fundraisers.
What responsibilities do parents have?
CVGHA is an all-volunteer organization. Parents are expected to help with clock, scoring, penalty box, locker room monitoring, Zamboni, concessions, etc. as needed. If a cooperative with Chippewa Falls and Menomonie is formed, parents will be asked to work at two home tournaments held in Chippewa Falls and at one Bingo session, which will pay for two away tournaments.
Why are the teams sometimes referred to as the ECA Junior Stars?
In high school, the girls would play for the Eau Claire Area (ECA) Stars. We like to refer to ourselves as the Junior Stars!
