By Josh Yohe, MCKEESPORT DAILY NEWS....Jack Waltonbaugh ended a nine-inning classic by crushing a walk-off home run to give Klingensmith Insurance a 7-6 victory over Quinn Construction. A couple of singles gave the Mudcats runners at first and third with one out in the top of the seventh. Next, Quinn manager Tom Simcho called for the safety squeeze but the batter failed to make contact with the bunt. However, the catcher's subsequent pickoff throw to third base hit the runner and trickled into left field, letting the Mudcats even the game. Nick Miller then lined a shot into left center field, giving Simcho's squad a 6-5 lead. Quinn then quickly retired Klingensmith's first two batters in the bottom of the seventh before Scott Dolekary singled to center. Moments later, Brian Hartung crushed a double to left center field and Dolekary raced home to even the score. The game ended two innings later on Waltonbaugh's blast.

ADDITIONAL PLAYERS

The day after the starters were named for the JimmyJam's Pizza All Star Game the list of additional players for the event has come out. Mulligan's Sports Bar's D.J. Michalski was an unanimous selection as the DNL's extra hitter, while the pitching staff will be rounded out by Dan Laird (Clancy's Pub), Scott Manko (Klingensmith Insurance) George Nahay (Mulligan's) and Jim Onder (Bowser), who was also added to the team as a shortstop. The rest of the DNL's position players, who were elected in a vote by the league's seven managers, are as follows: second baseman Ron Kramer (Bowser), outfielder Kyle Lucot (Bowser), first baseman Dalaine Ofchinick (Bowser), outfielder Chris Dittmar (Clancy's Pub), outfielder Brian Grise (Graham's Service), first baseman Jeff Simon (Graham's), shortstop Nick Glesk (Highlands), third baseman Anthony Iorio (Klingensmith), designated hitter Tim Donnelly (Mulligan's) and outfielder Jim Samolovitch (Mulligan's).

By John Santa, MCKEESPORT DAULY NEWS

The starter were announced yesterday after the Daily News League's seven managers came together earlier this week to vote for the league's first-team all-star roster in a final show of solidarity before the start of the postseason. Those selections were announced by DNL commissioner Nick Donato. "The starting group is all having very, very good years," the commissioner said. "Just looking at the stats compared to the names and every one of them's having a fantastic year. You probably wouldn't get any complaints about the guys making it." The 2010 DNL All-Star team will face the Pittsburgh Over-28 League All-Stars Saturday in the third annual interleague competition at Winklevoss Field. The JimmyJam's Pizza All Star Game will begin at 2 p.m. with a home run derby set to kick off at 12:45. Leading the group of three pitchers selected to the first team is veteran Klingensmith Insurance ace right-hander Mike Sikorski, who was a unanimous choice by each of the DNL's managers. Bowser Pontiac's Mike Finocchi and first-year Mulligan's Sports Bar ace David Pyles will round out the DNL's first-team pitching staff. Mulligan's Sports Bar's Tyler Scruggs was named the league's starting catcher, while the first-team infield will consist of first baseman Jake Kostelnik (Mulligan's), second baseman Joe Aul (Clancy's Pub), third baseman Tony Kostelnik (Quinn Construction) and shortstop Craig Price (Mulligan's) a unanimous selection. Outfielders Jordan Abromovitz (Mulligan's), the DNL's final unanimous selection, Jared Frey (Bowser) and Jim Pasquine (Quinn) will round out the starting line-up Saturday, along with designated hitter Scott Dolekary (Klingensmith). For the third straight year Andy Brettschneider, manager of the five-time defending DNL champion Bowser Pontiac Twins, will preside over the DNL squad. "It's an indescribable feeling to be able to coach the talent level that is on that team," Brettschneider said upon learning of his all-star honors. "Everyone on that team's a great guy and a great baseball player. It's a good feeling to be able to coach them." While the announcement of another inclusion onto the DNL's all-star team may have been a joyous occasion, it was also a little bit bittersweet for Brettschneider. Bowser stars Jim Onder and Dalaine Ofchinick were left off of the DNL's first-team all-star roster for the first time since the league actually began playing an all-star game in 2007. Both will play in the game as they were voted onto the list of additional players. Although he missed some time earlier this season, Ofchinick is currently hitting at a .333 clip with two home runs and 15 RBIs. Onder, his partner in crime, is hitting a team-best .446 batting average with 14 doubles, one home run and 20 RBIs. "Are they worthy of the first team? Yes," Brettschneider said. "I don't think this year they have proven that they deserve to be on the first team. Are they good enough to be on first team? Yes. Do they deserve to be on it is debatable." "I think they put the proper players that are playing well this year out there," the manager added of the final first-team balloting. "They didn't go on past standards." For Mulligan's manager Jeff Kuzma, Tuesday's all-star announcement couldn't have gone any better. After already clinching first-place honors coming out of the regular season with a 19-3-1 record as of Tuesday night, Kuzma's Brewers were rewarded with five first-team selections. "With the team that we have this year I truly feel that we have an all-star team one through nine," Kuzma said. "I'm extremely happy to see the guys that made it. Two of them, in Craig Price and Jordan, making it unanimously was well- deserved also." In 12 games played, Price is leading Mulligan's with a .581 batting average. The regular season showing by Abromovitz, however, was truly special. In 17 games he has tallied a .491 batting average with seven home runs, 18 runs scored and 23 RBIs. "With his ability to hit the long ball, leading in home runs this year, he's a threat every time he steps in the box," Kuzma said. "Yeah, it was a well-deserved unanimous decision with the way he's hitting this year." With the level of talent present on the DNL's 2010 squad, Donato is expecting his league to remain undefeated. "They're a very talented group," the commissioner said. "They're very competitive. They want to win. They're not just going to show up to a game and go through the motions. We'll be there playing to win." The league also announced Tuesday that Lincoln Place American Legion manager Jimmy Forse will serve as the public address announcer for the 2010 all-star festivities.

ALL STAR SATURDAY REPORT

The day started off with 6 of the 18 hitters in the first round of Mulligan's Sports Bar Home Run Derby blasting at least one shot out of Winklevoss Field to move onto the Finals. The last round ended in a tie forcing Jordan Abromovitz and Jim Pasquine to take part in a bomb off to determine the winner. It took two extra rounds before Abromovitz eventually topped Pasquine to win the Mulligan's Sports Bar Home Run Derby.
The JimmyJam's Pizza All Star Game started 20 minutes after the home run derby but the delay didn't cool off the DNL All Stars bats as they scored 12 first inning runs against the Pittsburgh 28 Plus All Stars on the way to a 22-7 victory. Jim Pasquine lead the DNL offense with 4 hits while Joe Aul had 3. Also delivering 2 hits each for the DNL were Jordan Abromovitz, Chris Dittmar, Bill Hodgetts, Tony Kostelnik, Jake Kostelnik, Dan Laird and George Nahay. The DNL was able to allow just 1 earned run over the final 6 innings of the contest by getting fine performances from Dan Laird (2 innings - 3 strike outs), George Nahay (2 innings - 2 strike outs - 1 earned run), Jake Kostelnik (1 inning) and Tony Kostelnik (1 inning). DNL legend Chris Grady lead the way for the Pitsburgh 28 team with 2 hits while current DNL All Star Dalaine Ofchinick, playing for the 28 plus team, hit the only home run in the JimmyJam's Pizza All Star Game.
