Major Baseball District All Stars Manager: Brian Venti Coaches: Dan Blevins, John Jones Canal’s District team opened the tournament with a 2-1 win over Capitol Wednesday night. In a classic pitchers duel, Canal’s Josh Venti went 5 2/3 innings and tallying 11 strikeouts in the process. Sean Kelby led off the 6th inning with a home run to put Canal up 2-1. Alex Jones and Brandon Hoffman also had hits for Canal. Canal 5, Stanton-Newport 1 Canal got their bats going on Thursday night with a 5-1 win over Stanton-Newport in the winners bracket semi-final game. Pitcher CJ Deery went the distance with a 1-hit, 7 strikeout effort. Leadoff batter Brandon Hoffman went 2-3 at the plate with a double along with stellar defensive play at shortstop. Ben Horney also made several defensive plays in the outfield to keep Stanton-Newport’s hit total low. Newark National 10, Canal 2 Canal could not get their offense going Monday night after National jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 10-2 win over Canal. CJ Deery hit his first HR of the tourney in the losing effort. Ben Horney and Logan Vivian also hat hits for Canal.

Canal was able to avoid elimination by producing 9 hits, which helped to score 14 runs. Wyatt Uhde and Ian Helm both had 2 hits each. Solid pitching performances were turned in by Ian Helm, Tyler Lewis, and Connor Feeley. Ethan Matthews knocked in the final two runs to seal the win!

Brandywine Invitational Canal Blue All Stars (Schedule) |
Game Results: Canal Blue 10, Brandywine Blue 8 Canal Blue's drive for the Brandywine Invitational championship came to an end on Saturday with a tough 11-4 loss. Naamans Red consistently hit singles and doubles to jump out to a 6-0 lead after two. Canal Blue battled back led by homeruns by Malcolm Williams and Sebastian Redick closing the game to 6-3 after four. However, Naamans Red put up another 5-spot in the 5th to put the game out of reach. Dillon Couden went 3 for 3 and Sandor Ludasi pitched 1 2/3 shut out innings in relief in the losing cause. Brandywine Invitational Canal Gold All Stars (Schedule) |
Game Results Canal Gold Opened their Brandywine Invitational with a 7-3 win over Newark National Red. Trey Matthews pitched a strong 4 innings, striking out 10 while going 3-3 at the plate with 2 home runs. Johnathan Hines had 5 K’s in relief. Gregory Hamrick added two hits and Ryan Oller, Devon Franek, Johnathan Hines and Joey Jourdan each had hits to help Canal’s offense. Canal Gold played hard and would not give up but could not overcome a Canal Blue 8 run first inning. The final score was Canal Blue 13, Canal Gold 8. Justin Lewis had a very good game pitching for Blue, notching a complete game and helping himself with a 3-run home run. Blue also had three run homers from Savion Field and Dillon Couden. Greg Hamrick had a strong game for Gold with two doubles, two runs scored, and solid pitching. Trey Matthews pitched 4 solid innings for Canal Gold allowing 1 hit and striking out 9. Johnathan Hines and Ryan Wilson closed out the game for the Gold. Trey also was 3-4 from the plate with a 3 run HR. Alan Boulden, Greg Hamrick and Christian Hancharick each had 2 hits for Canal Canal Gold 8, Newark National Blue 5 Canal Gold's bats finally came alive in the 5th inning of 3-0 deficit and put up 6 runs. Johnathon Hines got the victory for Gold. Canal was led offensively by Greg Hamrick who was 2-4 with a triple and a 2 run HR and Johnathan Hines added a single and a double. Devon Franek, Ryan Wilson and Ryan Oller also had hits for Gold who move into the 4 team playoff . Brandywine Red 12, Canal Gold 2 Canal Gold got off to a rough start and couldn't get out of a deep hole. The boys tried to hang in there. Devon Franek, Ryan Oller, and Alan Bolden had hits for Canal. Emir Garrett pitched a complete game as the Canal Junior team began it's district title defense with a big win. Up next is a battle with a tough Naamans squad on Friday at Canal.
Naamans 12 Canal 2
Emir Garrett and Austin Warrington pitched well for Canal, but the Naamans batters were on fire today. Richie Thompson (double) and Brendan Mower added hits for Canal as they move on to face Wilmington on Sunday.
Canal 9 Wilmington 2 Canal's pitching and hitting came together versus a scrappy Wimington squad. Richie Thompson and Ethan Kelby held the Wilmington bats in check while the Canal hitting attack was led by Austin Warrington (1-1, 3BBs, R), Derek Esposito (1-1, double, 2BBs, R) and Jason Franek (2-2, BB, 2RBIs, 2R).
Brandywine 9 Canal 7 Canal Juniors got down early and nearly came all the way back in a tough loss to the Brandywine Juniors team. Matthew Kohan and Austin Warrington pitched well for Canal. Emir Garrett (2 hits) and Jason Franek (reached base 4 times) helped the Canal hitting attack. Eric Goodman knocked in his 6th RBI in 4 games during the late inning comeback attempt.

Game Results Morgan Widdoes pitched four innings of no-hit ball and had a hit and two RBIs for Canal. She struck out five. Brooklynne Johnson had three hits, including two triples and five RBIs. Mallory Weir and Kelsey Higgins each added three hits for Canal. Canal 14, New Castle/Suburban 1 Juliette Cipolla and Alyssa Noonan each had two hits and three RBIs for Canal. Samantha Freeland was the winning pitcher.
State Tourney Nanticoke 3 Canal 1.
Canal girls came up short in their first game in the State tournament. Solid defensively,
Canal made one highlight play after another. The topper was Sam Freeland robbing a multiple RBI shot to short. Sam dove to her left and flipped the ball to Alyssa Noonan to record the out. The Nanticoke pitching proved to get the better of our girls, generating only two hits. A triple in the first inning by Brooklyn Johnson and the other hit came in the sixth by Keksey Higgins. Canal 7, New Castle 1 For Canal, Sean Smith went 2 for 4 with a single, double and 3 RBIs. Aaron Evans threw 6 2/3 innings, striking out 8 and allowing only 2 hits. Evans also singled knocking in 2 runs. Corey Branham added a double for Canals offense.

Game Results Canal 13, New Castle/Suburban 8 After the first inning the game was tied up 5-5. Behind the pitching Kacie Noonan and stellar infield play of Alyson Stecher, the Canal All-Stars 9/10 held the New Castle/Suburban team to just 3 more in 5 innings of play.
Canal 21, New Castle/Suburban 19 After being down by 6 runs in the 1sh inning, Canal fought back with a 13 run 3rd inning to take the lead away from New Castle/Suburban. The game went down to the wire with the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 6th. Pitcher Aleigha Saunders dug deep and ended the game on a strikeout, bringing home the victory and the District 2 Championship to Canal Little League 9/10.
