FORESTVILLE – Havoc City Elite founder James “Boogie” Washington didn’t set out to coach girls’ basketball, and he certainly didn’t envision creating his own AAU program.

That all changed three years ago, though, when Washington – who was coaching high school boys – began coaching the Future Players organization’s sixth grade team that included his daughter.

 “I kind of like, got slid into becoming a head coach with that organization,” Washington recalled at practice last week at Forestville High, “and from that point, it was just like I got a relationship with the kids, and then I started really finding myself falling in love with the idea of just coaching girls. With boys, you’ve kind of got to beat them across the head to get the point across, but girls are more receptive to information. I don’t want to say it’s easier, because there’s different obstacles that you have to go through with girls vs. boys. But at that age and with the parent support, I was like, ‘Man, I can deal with this.’”
