Scheel reflects on senior season
Union quarterback Jay Scheel used his senior season of football to continue to improve and grow overall as a player. This Iowa Hawkeye commitment did some good things in the process while compiling over 2,000 total yards, but felt there was even more he could have done.
"It went alright but the whole team felt it could have gone better. It is what it is I guess."
Scheel had to focus a lot of the mental portion of the game as a senior.
"We had a lot of adversity so I had to build up my skills as a leader, "he said. "When adversity was happening a lot, myself and all the captains had to step up and show what they have in leading."
The season was tough at times for Scheel as he battled through injuries to carry the team the best he could.
"I was bugged by a little bit of an injury so it was hard to play 100%, "Scheel said. "I was fighting through it and working to get my team better. I did everything I could to help my team continue to win and compete."
Scheel was slowed by a preseason knee surgery and is doing all that he can to get healthy.
"I am just going to do what the trainer and the doctor says. I'll see what they are going to have me do right now."
Even as their top returning scorer on the basketball court, Scheel is unsure what he will be doing this winter.
"Right now, I have to see my doctor. I know I want to do basketball but if I can't play, that is something I won't do."
Scheel does have a lot he hopes to improve on during the winter and spring.
"I'm just trying to get bigger and better. I am just realizing how to use myself and my abilities to become the best I really can be."
A commitment to the Hawkeyes has kept Scheel focused on what the club has accomplished.
"I think it is going well, "said Scheel. "They have lost some close games but they have pulled out a few and are bowl bound. That is a good thing after last year."
Scheel has made multiple trips to Iowa City for games this fall and has enjoyed them.
"It was fun, "he said. "The team played well and we got to see what kind of improvements they were making. It was fun to watch."
The other athletes that Iowa is bringing in have Scheel pleased thus far.
"I feel we have a good lass coming in. I can't wait to get there and make the most of my time there."
Scheel continues to hear frequently from the Hawkeye coaches.
"I get letters every week from them and the coaching staff keeps in touch, "said Scheel. "I talked with Coach Morgan not that long along and we caught up. He was talking to my about when my official is going to be."
The official trip appears to be scheduled close to Signing Day 2014.
"He said he wanted the commits to come in sometime in January," Scheel said. "He said about the 24th or 25th. It is something like that."
