REBELS WIN BIG, LOSE UGLY IN 1-1 POOL PLAY

June 16, 2019

EVAN SMITH SCURRIES BACK TO 3RD ON A BASES CLEARING TRIPLE VS NTX NATURALS.  KARSON SYMONDS(34) & JACKSON JORDAN(27) SCORED ON THE PLAY

The FW Rebels started the USSSA June Bug Tournament with one of their more impressive wins of the season, downing tourney favorite Ntx Naturals 10-4. Unfortunately, that momentum didn't carry over to the second game as the Rebels blew a 9-3 lead allowing seven runs vs the Melissa Cardinals without recording an out to fall 10-9.  The 1-1 mark placed the Rebels as the #7 seed out of the 13 teams.  Rains cancelled bracket play so the Rebels finished 7th overall.

FW REBELS 10       NTX NATURALS 4

Things got off to a slow start as the Rebels allowed 4 runs in the first inning to dig themselves into a 4-0 hole.  However, the Rebels would not allow another run the remainder of the game.  The bats came alive early answering with six runs of their own in the first.  Jace Franke led off with an infield single.  Then, Jack Dalton, Drew Horstman walked followed by RBI walks from Jon Doko & Karson Symonds. With the score 4-2, Jackson Jordan crushed a bases clearing double that scored Horstman, courtesy runner Evan Swindell, and Symonds.  The Rebels added one more run as Quentin Enos singled home Jordan.

Quentin Enos came into pitch in relief of starter Jack Dalton with the bases loaded and two outs with the score still 6-4 in the 2nd. Enos got the Naturals 6-hole hitter to pop one to short centerfield where Jace Franke made a nice sliding catch coming in on the ball to end the Naturals threat.

The Rebels added three more runs in the third inning.  With one out Karson Symonds walked and Jackson Jordan singled.  Evan Smith then stepped to the plate and smashed a triple to right center field to make the score 8-4. Quentin Enos hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Smith.

Enos was extremely effective on the mound.  He pitched 2.1 innings, didn't allow one hit and the only baserunner he allowed, he picked off first.

EVAN SMITH HAD A REMARKABLE DAY AT THE PLATE WITH 3 TRIPLES AND 6 RBI. ABOVE IS RIGHT AFTER THE CONNECTION OF ONE OF THOSE TRIPLES.

MELISSA CARDINALS 10     FW REBELS 9

This will go down as one of the more disappointing defeats of the season for the Rebels. They had leads of 5-1 after the first inning, 7-1 after they hit in the second, and 9-3 heading to the bottom of the third.  Unfortunately, 11 walks and 2 hit batters by 4 Rebel pitchers just couldn't get it done.  In the 3rd inning alone, the Rebels walked 8 of the 10 Cardinal hitters. 6 of those scored.

The Rebels definitely hit well enough to win this game.  They scored five in the top of the first, all with two outs.  Jon Doko doubled in Jack Dalton who had singled to make it 1-0.  Karson Symonds hit an infield single and Jackson Jordan walked to fill the bases.  Evan Smith followed with a bases clearing triple to make it 4-0. Quentin Enos singled in Smith to finish the scoring.

In the 2nd inning, Jace Franke scored on a wild pitch, and Drew Horstman singled in Jack Dalton.  The Rebels scored two more runs in the 3rd inning on a double by Jackson Jordan, another triple from Evan Smith, and a double by Quentin Enos.  The Rebels were ahead 9-3 heading to the bottom of the 3rd but couldnt hang on and lost 10-9.
