The FW Rebels finally got a break from the weather and were able to squeeze in a 1-Day USSSA 14UAAA tournament at Big League Dreams in Mansfield. The Rebels went 1-1 and then dropped the SemiFinal game to the eventual tournament champs who were from Monroe, LA. Still, there were some positive performances the Rebels could build on with four tournaments remaining in the 2021 season.
Game 1
Impact Mercer 9
FW Rebels 7
The Rebels fell behind 1-0 and then staged a 4-run rally in the 2nd inning. All 4 runs were scored with two outs. Bryson Snow got things started by reaching on an error from the Impact thirdbaseman. Kameron Mantyh then lined a single to right center. Coleman Peck walked to fill the bases. Then Evan Swindell & Caden Spurling had back to back walks to tie the game at 1, and then take the lead 2-1. Evan Wainright then hit a grounder to short who threw low to first enabling Peck to score from 3rd and Swindell all the way from 2nd.
Impact answered immediately though scoring 5 runs in the bottom of the 2nd on just 1 hit. 5 walks sparked their rally.
Once again, the Rebels fought right back. With one out, Evan Smith blasted a double deep to centerfield. With two outs, Wyatt Baccus hit a clutch single to right to make it 6-5. Baccus was then able to score on yet another error by Impact off of the bat of Bryson Snow to tie it at 6.
Impact scored one in the bottom of the 3rd to make it 7-6 but the Rebels tied it again. This time, Caden Spurling lined a single to center to score Coleman Peck who had walked and stole 2nd. That's all the Rebels could score and they were unable to hold Impact down in the bottom of the last inning as Impact went on to win 9-7.
Game 2
FW Rebels 4
Ntx Titans 3
The visiting Rebels wasted little time scoring in this contest. With one out, Evan Smith singled and stole second. Smith then scored on a grounder off of the bat of Wyatt Baccus who reached on an error. Carlos Guerrero walked and Charlie Rusk singled to left to fill the bases. Courtesy runner Evan Wainright scored on a wild pitch to make it 2-0. Quentin Enos followed that by lacing a double to right center field to score Baccus and Guerrero to make it 4-0. Believe it or not, the Rebels would not get another hit for the remainder of the game.
So the task fell on the hands of Coleman Peck who started on the hill. Peck was brilliant for 4 innings as he allowed just 1 hit in those innings while striking out 5. He tired in the 5th inning and the Titans rallied on 2 singles and a hit batter. Carlos Guerrero came in to close things out and that he did. Guerrero faced 3 hitters, struck out two of them, and threw another out who was trying to get to third on a wild pitch. Rebels held on to win 4-3 and advance to the Semis.
Game 3
NELA Prospects 4
FW Rebels 1
The NELA Prospects were a formidable opponent with a lot of talented players from Louisiana. The visiting Rebels were facing one of the Prospects better pitchers but got on the board first. Coleman Peck walked to open the game and Evan Smith reached when the Prospects pitcher made a throwing error to second base on an attempted double play. Wyatt Baccus then walked to fill the bases with none out. With one out, Quentin Enos hit a fly ball to left center that fell right in front of the center fielder scoring Peck. However, thinking the ball would be caught, Wyatt Baccus was thrown out on a force play at 2nd. The Rebels rally ended with just 1 run scoring.
Evan Smith started on the mound for the Rebels 4 of the first 5 reached giving the Prospects a 2-1 lead. Bad luck struck the Rebels as a fly ball was hit to Evan Wainright in left field who lost it in the sun, allowing 2 more Prospects runs to score to make it 4-1.
Smith settled down after that point, and Wyatt Baccus tosses a dominant 2 innings sending the game to the 5th inning still 4-1. The Rebels were no match for the Prospects pitcher though who only allowed one batter to put the ball in play out of the final 18 batters he faced. Out of the final 18 he struck out 11 and walked 6.
