LAUREL 21 FERGUS 6

LAUREL — Krew Hunter scored three touchdowns while Kale Hunter nabbed two interceptions as Laurel's football team took down Lewistown 21-6 on Friday at the Laurel Sports Complex.

Junior Locomotives (2-0 overall) quarterback Krew Hunter had touchdown runs of one, two and three yards as Laurel had to grind out a win in its home opener against the Golden Eagles (1-1), who kept scoring low well into the game and kept themselves in it as the Locos were only up 7-6 going into the fourth quarter.

The first play of the fourth quarter, however, saw Krew Hunter score from a 2-yard keeper to cap off a mammoth 17-play scoring drive from Laurel that took nearly nine minutes of game time.

He then capped off his hat-trick of touchdowns with a 3-yard burst with 6:37 to play after Kale Hunter (not related to Krew) intercepted Lewistown quarterback McKay Shobe for the second time to get the Locomotives the ball back.

Laurel held Lewistown out of the endzone entirely, with the Golden Eagles getting a pair of first-half field goals (from 26 and 30 yards) via sophomore Emmett Netburn.

Laurel will attempt to make itself 3-0 when it visits Hardin next week. Lewistown will host Sidney in Week 3.

FRENCHTOWN 42 CORVALLIS 0*

FRENCHTOWN — The game had been over since before the sun set, but the Frenchtown Broncs had no intention of letting up.

The Corvallis Blue Devils trailed 42-0 in the waning moments of the fourth quarter while still trying to put their first points on the board. With the Broncs' second-unit defense on the field and a running clock in effect, Frenchtown sought a goal-line stand.

It appeared Corvallis scored, but a penalty on the play pushed the visiting Blue Devils back behind the 10-yard line. On the final play of the game, quarterback Aydan Mayn was sacked.

This one was clearly personal.

"Really excited by the way our backups answered the call and kept the zero on the board," first-year Frenchtown head coach Seth Foster said. "A full program win."

The goal-line stand preserved the shutout, capping off a 42-0 rout in Foster's home opener as head coach.

Foster, though in his first year at the helm of the Broncs' program, served on the coaching staff for four years before reaching the head position. He saw three-straight playoff appearances, and three-straight wins over the Blue Devils, before a 2023 season that included a 41-6 loss at Corvallis and a 4-4 record which failed to qualify for the postseason.

In total, Frenchtown had both reached the playoffs and beaten Corvallis six-straight years before 2023. After one down year, the team has outscored its' first two opponents this season 84-12.

"It's one that's been circled on the calendar," Mason said. "When you get these southwestern A matchups, they mean historically a little bit more to all of us."

"We're a really tight-knit group," Foster said. "There's a really strong brotherhood between them, and they've gotten that from the work they've put in in the summer."

Broncs senior quarterback Brody Hardy gave the Blue Devils' defense fits throughout the night, recording three rushing touchdowns and throwing one more

"We pegged him at the beginning of the year to be one of the best quarterbacks in the conference," Corvallis head coach Josh McCrossin said. "He certainly had a good game today.

Tensions rose in the conference matchup early on, as unsportsmanlike conduct penalties flew on both sides throughout the first half. After the Broncs jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter, three-consecutive 15-yard penalties against Frenchtown vaulted Corvallis down the field.

Down in the red zone with a chance to get back into the game, Frenchtown defensive back Bailey Corette intercepted Mayn and took the ball 96 yards to the house. The play, predictably, also featured another 15-yard penalty.

"The order of the game is structured by the players," McCrossin. "Players play hard, things happen and I understand and respect that. There's a line to it, and both teams found their line."

Hardy's third rushing touchdown closed out the first half, giving the Broncs a 35-0 lead that prompted a running clock for the second half. Junior running back Cole Johnson, who ran for 136 yards in week one, burst out for a 47-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that ended the scoring.

"Offense did a great job moving the ball on the ground," Mason said. "Once we got things going in all three phases, we were good."

Both teams hit the road next Friday as Frenchtown travels to Lakeland, Idaho while Corvallis heads to Whitefish. The Blue Devils beat Whitefish 7-0 last year.

"Football is about doing hard things," McCrossin said. "when hard things happen, you have to make a choice to keep going on the path that's trusted or step aside. I think our guys are ready to take on the hard choices."

CLASS 'A' ROUNDUP

HAVRE — Quarterback Howie Martin threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns and No. 2 Billings Central went on the road to beat No. 3-ranked Havre 35-20 in a top-5 Class A matchup Friday night.

William Snell caught both of Martin's touchdown throws and finished with 143 receiving yards. Running back Ayden Salter also had 107 rushing yards and a touchdown for the Rams, who moved to 2-0 with the victory.

Martin and Snell hooked up for 31-yard touchdown to open the scoring and put Central up 7-0, but Havre answered with a touchdown from Colter Solomon (thought the point-after kick was botched).

The teams went into halftime tied 14-14, thanks in part to a 71-yard touchdown catch by Havre's Trey Gary. Central took command in the second half as Snell took a pass from Martin and ran all the way for an 82-yard TD connection.

Salter gave Central a 28-20 lead later in the third with a 56-yard touchdown scamper. Another Rams touchdown capped the scoring and salted away a key road victory for Central.

BUTTE — As Butte Central senior running back Justus McGee said as the Maroons celebrated a stunning overtime win over Hamilton, it was “pay day”.

Coming off of consecutive one-win seasons, Central doubled that mark with a 22-21 victory over Hamilton on Friday night to begin its season 2-0.

It’s the Maroons’ first victory over the Broncs since 2015.

“I’m a senior, all our seniors were nine years old when it (last) happened,” McGee said.

“It just shows that no matter what it looks like, you just got to keep grinding. I’ve been grinding since freshman year and I haven’t gotten pay off since right now…this is pay day for us after three years of grinding, this is our pay day.”

McGee gave Central its first lead of the game with a five-yard rushing touchdown on its first possession of overtime. Hamilton answered immediately, with quarterback Kaeden Gum finding the end zone on a rushing score.

Then, the Broncs’ offense stayed on the field to go for the two-point conversion and the win.

The Maroons, starving for their first 2-0 start since 2017, rose to the occasion. When Gum came up short of the goal line on his rushing attempt for the win, Central’s players and coaches immediately flooded Bob Green Field.

After trailing 15-0 late in the third quarter, the Maroons pulled off the comeback victory in dramatic fashion.

“I’m just so proud of our kids. We’ve had two tough seasons in a row, and they work so hard in the offseason,” Central head coach Don Peoples Jr. said.

“They’re learning how to win I think, I think they proved that tonight. They didn’t quit down 15-0. I just really love the heart the kids showed tonight.”
