NCS Championships were not conducted from 1931 through 1974. According to Paul Gaddini, NCS Commissioner of Athletics from 1972 to 2000, on October 31, 1972, Robert Boehme, Principal of Calistoga High School, requested that North Coast Section conduct championship competition in team sports. Subsequently, a committee consisting of Sam Zackheim, Principal, Monte Vista H.S., Will Sawyer, former Principal, John F. Kennedy H.S. - Fremont, Jim Hanretty, Principal, Tamalpais-Mill Valley, Rich Abel, former Athletic Director, Richmond H.S., and Robert Boehme were appointed to study Section Playoffs. The committee worked in conjunction with separate coaches committees representing various team sports. Based on the recommendation and work by the committee the NCS Board of Managers approved football playoffs at its January 18, 1975 meeting and reaffirmed that decision at its May 3, 1975 meeting . Apparently it was a close vote, and the deciding vote to resume NCS Football Playoffs was cast by then NCS President Dutch Williams, representing the Alameda County Athletic League. The rest is now our history. |
