A THROWBACK: 1953 EASTERN DISTRICT HS TEAM (now GSC) @ EBBETS FIELD (HOME OF THE BROOKLYN DODGERS)
IN OUR ATTEMPT TO CONTACT ALL OF OUR SCHOOL'S ALUMNI (FROM BOTH GRAND STREET CAMPUS AND EASTERN DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL), A GENTLEMAN NAMED ED DONOVAN RECEIVED OUR EMAIL. HE GENEROUSLY WENT INTO HIS ARCHIVES AND FOUND THIS 1953 TEAM PHOTO OF THE EASTERN DISTRICT HS TEAM TAKEN @ EBBETS FIELD, HOME OF THE LEGENDARY BROOKLYN DODGERS. THIS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! (AS YOU ALL NOW KNOW THAT GRAND STREET CAMPUS HIGH SCHOOL REPLACED EASTERN DISTRICT HS OFFICIALLY IN 1998).
WE ARE NOW MUCH MORE EXCITED TO STEP UP OUR EFFORTS TO CONTACT ALL ALUMNI AND ORGANIZE A REUNION VERY SOON. ALONG WITH THOSE EFFORTS, WE WILL HAVE OUR ANNUAL ALUMNI GAME AS WELL IN LATE MAY. PLEASE SEND US YOUR TEAM PHOTOS AND LET US KNOW WHAT YEAR THEY WERE TAKEN. WE WILL PLACE ALL OF YOUR PHOTOS IN THIS WEBSITE'S PHOTO ALBUM FOR ALL OF OUR BASEBALL ALUMNI FAMILY & FRIENDS TO SEE.
ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU ED DONOVAN (1953 GRADUATE). PLEASE SEE HIS COMMENTS IN THE GUEST BOOK.
YOU WILL ALSO SEE NORMAN LEV (1947 GRADUATE), HE WAS A PART OF THE 1ST TEAM EVER CREATED AT EASTERN DISTRICT HS. PLEASE SEE HIS COMMENTS IN THE GUEST BOOK AS WELL.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM THE REST OF OUR EASTERN DISTRICT HS AND GRAND STREET CAMPUS HS ALUMNI.
FROM YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD BASEBALL COACH,
MELVIN MARTINEZ
DELLIN BETANCES is our most famous & popular GSC Baseball Alumni ever!
Dellin (2006 Graduate) on the mound for GSC during his senior year!
Dellin looking very serious!
Dellin Betances first 5 years with the NY Yankees resulted in 5 All Star Game Appearances and he shattered a few records as well. The most notably record was the one held by the Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera for the most strikeouts in a season by a relief pitcher. Dellin shattered that record with 130 and has the record with 100+strikeouts for 3 years in a row.
NOW, Dellin is with the NY Mets and is trying to make a comeback after last year's shoulder injury knocked him out for the season.
Williams Jerez played for a few MLB Teams including LA Angels, SF Giants & Pittsburgh Pirates!
Williams Jerez did not make it as a hitter when he was selected as an outfielder in the 2nd round of the MLB 2011 Draft.
Williams has pitched in middle relief for several MLB teams such as the Los Angeles Angels, San Francisco Giants, and the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Williams Jerez has inspired our Grand Street Campus HS players to also get their work in as a pitcher because you never know. You can make it as a pitcher!
Catcher Ernesto "BJ" Lopez (2012 GSC Alumni) traded to the Miami Marlins!
Ernesto "BJ" Lopez (2012 GSC Alumni) is a catcher that signed as a free agent with the Arizona Diamondbacks after our 2012 Championship Season. BJ hit his way to earn the Prestigious "Triple Crown" Award for leading the league in Batting Average, Home Runs, and RBIs. He also hit the go ahead home run over the left wall at Coney Island's MCU Park when we beat George Washington HS for our high school's lone championship.
BJ has also played for the Miami Marlins. His minor league career has come to a halt because of the dreadful Covid-19 Pandemic. We hope to see him in the minor leagues very soon.
OUR FATHER & GODFATHER OF OUR GSC TEAM IS ALWAYS WATCHING FROM HEAVEN!
A TRIBUTE TO THE MAYOR OF WILLIAMSBURG, OUR DAD & GODFATHER OF THE GRAND ST CAMPUS BASEBALL FAMILY!
GSC has a bigger heart than any other team!
PLAY HARD OR GO HOME!
GSC IS ALL HEART!
GSC BELIEVES IT CAN DO IT AGAIN!
GSC BELIEVES!
CHAMPIONS FOR LIFE!
WE ARE THE 2012 NEW YORK CITY PSAL CLASS "A" HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL CHAMPIONS!
ON FRIDAY NIGHT, JUNE 8TH, 2012 WE BEAT THE LEGENDARY GEORGE WASHINGTON HS BASEBALL TEAM 2-1 IN FRONT OF A JAM PACKED CROWD AT THE HOME OF THE BROOKLYN CYCLONES MCU STADIUM IN CONEY ISLAND. THE CROWD WORE BABY BLUE T-SHIRTS AS THERE WAS NO WAY TO CONFUSE THEM AS GW FANS. COACH MELVIN MARTINEZ HAS WON HIS FIRST HS CHAMPIONSHIP AND IT WAS THE SCHOOL'S FIRST CHAMPIONSHIP EVER SINCE THE TEAM WAS CREATED IN 1947 KNOWN AS EASTERN DISTRICT HS KNIGHTS. GRAND ST CAMPUS, FORMERLY KNOWN AS EASTERN DISTRICT HS, WAS CREATED IN 1998. IT IS THE FIRST TIME THIS WILLIAMSBURG COMMUNITY HAS EXPERIENCED A BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP! WE HAVE COME CLOSE ALMOST EVERY YEAR SINCE 2002. WE HAVE HAD SOME GREAT TALENTED TEAMS BUT WE ALWAYS SOMEHOW FELL SHORT. SOMEHOW, I AM LED TO BELIEVE THAT GOD GAVE US EVEN MORE OF AN INCENTIVE TO WIN BECAUSE WE WERE DEDICATED TO WIN FOR OUR DAD, WHO WAS STRUGGLING WITH HIS FIGHT AGAINST TWO CANCERS AND A 7 YEAR OLD NAMED QUINTON WARD, WHO PLAYS ON MY LITTLE LEAGUE TEAM, WHO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH STAGE 3 CANCER 2 MONTHS AGO AND UNDERGOES CHEMOTHERAPY AS WELL AS OUR DAD, EUDALIO MARTINEZ. WE MANAGED TO WIN THIS GAME'S PITCHING DUEL WITH GOOD DEFENSE & CLUTCH HITTING. IT IS NOW OFFICIAL, WE ARE CHAMPIONS! WE FINISHED THE YEAR WITH A RECORD BREAKING 41ST WIN OF THE SEASON. LAST YEAR, WE BROKE THE PREVIOUS RECORD WITH 40 WINS. WE ALSO HAD OTHER RECORDS TO BE PROUD OF: 2 OF OUR PLAYERS WON THE WINGATE AWARD (CONSIDERED THE HEISMAN TROPHY IN PSAL) IN BACK TO BACK YEARS (WILLIAMS JEREZ 2011 & ERNESTO LOPEZ 2012), WE ALSO BECAME THE FIRST BROOKLYN HIGH SCHOOL TO WIN THE PRESTIGIOUS AND BIGGEST NORTHEAST TOURNAMENT KNOWN AS THE JAMES MONROE HS BASEBALL SPRING TOURNAMENT IN 42 YEARS AND WON IT IN BACK TO BACK YEARS (2011 & 2012), AND WE HAD PLAYERS SELECTED IN THE MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT IN BACK TO BACK YEARS (WILLIAMS JEREZ 2011 2ND RD W/ BOSTON RED SOX & JOSE CUAS 40TH RD W/ TORONTO BLUE JAYS), AND ERNESTO LOPEZ SIGNED AS A FREE AGENT WITH THE ARIZONA DIAMONDBACKS. WE CAME CLOSE IN 2011 WHEN WE LOST IN THE SEMI-FINALS IN 2011 BUT WE WON THE NYC HS PSAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN 2012! THIS EXCEPTIONAL GROUP OF GENTLEMEN WERE TRULY A DYNASTY! THEY WILL MAKE US PROUD AS THEY BEGIN THEIR COLLEGE BASEBALL CAREERS! GOOD LUCK GENTLEMEN!
TAKE A LOOK AT OUR 1ST EVER NEW YORK CITY H.S. BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP RING! ALRIGHT!
OUR SCHOOL'S FIRST EVER NYC HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP RING CEREMONY WAS HELD ON FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 AT THE GRAND STREET CAMPUS HS AUDITORIUM BEGINNING AT 5PM.
WE INVITED ALL ALUMNI (FROM BOTH THE EASTERN DISTRICT HS & GRAND STREET CAMPUS), FAMILY, AND FRIENDS TO JOIN US IN THIS VERY SPECIAL HISTORIC MOMENT FOR OUR LEGENDARY BASEBALL PROGRAM.
THIS EVENT WOULD NOT HAD BEEN POSSIBLE IF IT WERE NOT FOR THE MANY ALUMNI THAT STEPPED UP AND PAID FOR OUR PLAYERS' RINGS. OUR PLAYERS' WOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PAY FOR THEIR $200 CHAMPIONSHIP RING DUE TO FINANCIAL CONSTRAINTS.
BUT NONE THE LESS, WE MADE IT HAPPEN AND WE CELEBRATED!!!!!!!
HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT OUR ANNUAL ALUMNI BASEBALL GAME WHICH WILL BE HELD ON SATURDAY, MAY 11TH OR MAY 18TH, 2013!
BIG THANKS TO ED DONOVAN, NORMAN LEV, AND JUAN CARLOS ORTIZ WHOM LIVE A LONG DISTANCE AND MANAGED TO MAKE THE TRIP AND JOIN OUR FESTIVITIES!
ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
FROM YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD BASEBALL COACH,
MELVIN MARTINEZ,
HEAD COACH SINCE 1996
