Winter 2021 Newsletter

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year!  Most of us are happy to turn the page on a very challenging 2020 filled with pandemic worries and the restrictions put on our ability to do normal activities with family and friends.  This included limited access to ballfield permits in our home park and the canceling of our regular spring/summer season last year. We were not alone as nationwide Little League Inc cancelled all activities.  Despite that we were able to run some tournaments and fall ball activities with our 10u, 12u baseball tournament teams and the senior girls team.  The good news is we plan to resume a spring/summer season in 2021 with several necessary safety protocols (details to come).

2021 Season Registration is NOW open!  We are offering online registration this year as a safer way to sign up for this spring/summer.  District 23 leagues are also collaborating for more tournaments and possibly interleague play this season.  Our goal is to offer a full season for all divisions in T-ball (ages 4-5), Pee Wee Baseball (6-8), LL Minors Baseball (9-10), LL Majors Baseball (11-12), Juniors Baseball (13-14); and girls softball Junior Division (13-15) and Senior Division (16-18). We strive to keep fees as low as possible while maintaining our quality programming. Register online! Above under ** Register Online Now **, click on 2021 SPRING/SUMMER REGISTRATION, sign in or create an account to proceed with registration.

2020 Highlights

Playing for Change Tournament: Several District 23 LL organizations came together in July to participate in the 1st ever Playing for Change tournament. LES-OLS LL participated with a competitive 12u tournament team and collaborated with GVLL to combine players for a 10u team.  The tournament lasted a full week with LES-OLS LL, PSL LL, DLL, GVLL and Harlem LL all participating with teams.  Players had matching Playing for Change Jerseys with all players being announced as part of the opening game ceremonies. Our 12u team was competitive going 2-2 in the tournament, with the losses coming in very tight games. All the players had a wonderful time and appreciated getting at least a little baseball in before summer vacation was over.

Congrats to the LES-OLS Lady Twins (16-18yrs) who came together to win the Bronx RBI championship in the summer of 2020. They also participated in multiple tournaments out of town in New Jersey and Long Island. Coach Dily Felix and the girls were also able to secure a three-way tie in the All Shore tournament in Perth Amboy, NJ with a 3-1 record. This team has been a real stand out over the past several seasons highlighting the quality ball that comes from OLS and the Lower East Side.  Shout out to Lady Twins MVP: Shaina Palmares and Most Improved Player: Jade Altamirano…well done ladies!!

Kudos to Lucas Almonte for passing the NY Bar exam. Lucas is a former Knights senior team pitcher and infielder that won multiple championships in his 3 years of play with the team.  This young man always impressed us with his maturity and crafty pitching since the age of 16.  He was a fierce competitor but his humble and cerebral approach to the game made him a team favorite.  Lucas credits his competitive baseball experience with keeping his eye on the ball academically, as well.  He continued his desire for a challenging career by graduating from Georgetown Law and in 2020 passed the NY bar exam.  Join us in congratulating Lucas and wishing him all thbest as he embarks on a corporate law career with top firm Skadden, Arps.

Knights Unlimited Baseball: We also want to send our congrats to some of Lucas’ former teammates on the Knights unlimited team that won their first NYC Metro championship this fall!  These guys never lost their desire to play competitive hardball even as they balance their careers and family obligations.  Thanks for continuing to make us proud.

Coaches: we will be reaching out to you for a zoom meeting to kick off the pre-season organization. We are also looking for more parents and volunteers who want to coach or just help make the season for the children of our community special.  If interested, please email us at olskidssparkle@yahoo.com.
