Great event The World Games. We learned a tremendous amount and look forward to working with to make it even more powerful. I would like to share a few ideas so we can reach the minimum number of entries to give away the laptop and free tutoring to one of the players. Can you give me a breakdown of teams, ages and cities they are from so we can tailor services accordingly. I noticed quite a bit of Stockton and that area. Also wanted to pass info below. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: NBA Orlando Magic Aaron Gordon FREE Basketball Camp From: "Darlene Marquez via Sobrato Center For Nonprofits (Groupsite)"

Coach Shaw, As you have been very adamant about Jovonte is improving. I must admit I am very happy with the progress he is making not only from the physical side but as well as the emotional stand point. He seems to be motivated more and I am seeing his confidence improve each day. Coach Shaw, I owe a great deal to you for believing in my son when I fail short in doing the same. I have been wanting to pull him due to his lack of desire, you always communicated to me that you see what I couldn’t and you were correct. You never once doubted him, your positive reinforcement played a significant role in helping him as well I. Coach thanks for giving my son the opportunity to learn and grow with you. I appreciate you and your impact your are having on kids. Linda Jones Program Manager | HomeFirst

Coach Shaw, Good afternoon. Thank you for your time and consideration earlier today. I am in alignment with your Education Outreach vision for the World Games. I can envision 2 workshops each day, a booth/table, contest giveaways and data collection to continue the outreach continuously. We would share the news about the World Games through our newsletter and letters of strategic partners. The workshops should be relevant to the audiences. I would be willing to do any interviews or speaking engagements regarding this subject on our behalf, leading to and during the games if schedule align. A-726.2521 Attn: All, & Parents & Players this is a story from the mind of one of our players that should be name player of the year and writer of the year. Beautiful, I really enjoyed reading about David's personal experience this was amazing. To Coach Shaw Thank you for giving our boys this opportunity. I see a change in Charles. Jan S. Journey to Washington David Awolowo #2 For some people, trips are used to get away from their usual environments others may use the trip to relax and rest their minds. For the 11 members of the Hilltoppers Academy, this trip to Washington was also a basketball tournament and will definitely write memories in each member. The journey began before the trip actually commenced. The past two weeks prior to the trip, practice was crucial for our anticipation for Washington. During the weeks of practices, Coach Shaw had to force us to be prepared mentally, since none of us has ever before played in Washington and know what Washington competition was like other then our Coach. We couldn't assume what type of competition Washington held, we could only have ideas that they were going to be tough competition. On the day of the trip our Coach Shaw wanted us to meet up at 4:30 am, at the local high school where we held practices. Even though the time was proleptical. Everybody was so captivated by the trip, I’m sure no one would have any problem waking up as early as 2:00 am. After a couple of minutes of saying goodbye to our parents and the parents saying good luck to the players, we were off and running. After making only five stops to fuel up the Hilltoppermobile and having restroom breaks we had finally arrived at Eugene, Oregon. The team immediately notice the difference between the two States. California was more of a inside State, though it may have a couple of cities that are more “open” with trees and farms such as Chico or Fresno. In Oregon there was a lot more cities that seemed like they were contained in an open area and with less urban cities. After we arrived at Eugene, which by the way is not known for anything other than containing one of the most prestigious college in the country. When our Coach told us we had booked a tour around the athletic facilities with Oregon’s associate athletic director, Mike Duncan. There were no words that can describe how much it meant to us going out of your way and making us feel like celebrities. As student athletes, the team was overwhelmed with the tour because there was so much athletic history revolving around the school. One of our guard, had been fantasizing about Oregon University since he was toddler. After the experience at Oregon University, we were on our way to Washington. We arrived at the Hotel Quality Inn around 10:00. The team unpacked and was ready to play three games next day for a pre-game tune up and ultimately for the double game elimination. In the Washington Convention Center where all the games were held. Our Coach had a very special relationship for the person who ran the whole camp iron fist, Mr. Brown. Their friendship with one another was heartfelt, it felt like they knew each other for all their lives and just got along. Since they were so close and Mr.Brown hosted the tournament we didn’t have to worry about being thirsty or hungry from the time we were there. Days went by quickly as soon as we arrived, we played three warm up games just to see where we were at in the bracket. We ended up going undefeated, beating the opponents by 15 or more. The very next day was the first game that it really counted for the tournament ultimately towards the championship. We had another three game we had quickly breezed by the first two team and won. The third game was a challenge, we rattled back with them back and forth. We ended up having the upper edge at the end and realized that the only reason why we came as far as we did was that we worked as a team. We won the championship and the feeling of victory was slightly delayed until the next day. Our coach made a wise decision by not telling us we won the championship beforehand and putting us in another bracket to win another one. Not knowing we have already won our division, we were essentially bumped up to play in a higher division where it really brought out the best of Washington’s competition. We lost to two teams and lost tough and crowd pleasing games. The first team we lost to was more like a gridiron brawl. Refs hardly called any fouls, there was a lot of exchanging of words, and elbows. They had scraped a couple of points more then us during the end of the game to advance. The last game we lost to was another story, although the intensity was alike this game was filled with excitement and hard played. The playing style of Washington made are team adjust to the level of toughness they played. They roughed us up and we gladly returned the favor. The game ended with it being tied and both teams were in 1-1 bonus. Which means that if any team fouls one another, whoever they foul gets to take a trip to the free throw line and take two shots. Our Power Forward had accidentally fouled one of the opposing team player and sent him to the line with a couple of free throws. As the opposing team prepared to shoot the first free throw, everybody including the crowd realized what was in staked in this game. The winner would advance in the championship game. As one of the g player shot his first free throw it rattled in the rim and popped out and made the game remain tied up. And as he was preparing for his second free throw that’s when we felt the crowd erupted and some were making noise and some were quiet and praying, but, no one that was watching the game was calm. He sunken his last free throw and advanced his team to the championship. A game like that usually the team that lost would feel bitter about the other teams would feel bitter, but not in this case The Hilltoppers and Kellogg showed each other the greatest respect. That was our last game in Washington and I couldn’t expect anything more respectful. Kellogg played in the championship game to the team we lost to, but the team that we lost to was not a team with the best morals. They played dirty and were quite disrespectful. Our coach decided to take the team out so we can watch the two teams for the championship game from the stands. At first the our team cared less about whoever would win that game, we just wanted to see the winner, but then we realized which team really deserved to win and were more respectful. We cheered on Kellogg until our lungs had collapsed, encouraging them when they made layups, complimenting them when they made a good defensive play. They ended up winning the game with a clutch shot and right after they won the game they, did something that created more respect for us towards them and warmed our hearts. As soon as the were pronounced champions they ran towards the Hilltoppers Academy and gave us a big hug and a thank you and we shared a photo with their team. That was my last memory in Washington, and it couldn't have ended anymore classy.

Hello Coach Shaw Hope all is well. I assume the summer tournaments are underway and you are very busy. Just an update on Brenan. He just graduated from Archbishop Mitty High School and headed to CalPoly San Luis Obispo. Brenan is taking up Computer Engineering this coming Fall. I am very thankful that you played a key role in developing Brenan in his younger years and this showed with his dedication to academic and non-academic activities in high school. Playing under your guidance made him easy to develop great work ethic and ability in dealing with success of basketball and failures in high school and forthcoming college. Thank you.
