| Randie-I assume this is a fast pitch question. A batter is entitled to 1st base if hit by a pitch even though it hit the ground first(unless they made no attempt to get out of the way)Slow pitch the ball is dead when it contacts the ground.

| Hank, this is something that Bill L. brings up from time to time on this subject. Can we read the batters mind to know if they did or did not make an effort to avoid the pitch? Could they have simply frozen? Almost everytime the answer will be Yes and award the base! If the batter actually steps into the ball then it will be obvious they were not trying to get out of the way. This is probably the best way to handle this tricky situation. When in doubt give them the base award.
