| A throw is made from the outfield to the catcher for a play on a runner trying to score...the throw is late, the runner scores...the catcher then makes a throw to third on a runner advancing, but the catcher brushes the home plate umpire, and the contact causes the catcher to overthrow third, and the runner comes in to score...the defensive team's coach claims umpire interference and requests the runner returned to second base...

| Big OOP's on the Umpire. It sounds as if he was in the way and did interfere with the play, and the runner should have returned.

| OPA, no interference on the ump. You have contact on this play. Yes it is an oops play on the ump but it is not interference. Only time you can have ump interference is on a batted ball hitting ump before it passes fielders or umpiring interfering with catchers throw trying to get a person stealing or on a pickoff.

| There is no ASA rule that states an umpire can interfere with a thrown ball by a catcher that was not from a pitched ball. That rule is 8-6-F covers umpire interference on a plate umpire interfering with a catchers attempt to throw out a runner who is stealing, or an attempted pickoff play. Effect- delayed dead ball at time of interference. If runner is out,the ball becomes live.If runner is not out, the ball becomes dead.Runner(s)return to the base occupied at the start of the pitch.
