R1 on first base. B1 hits ball to the outfield fence. Both runners are heading home with little distance between them. R1 does not slide and catcher who is just out of the batters box up the third base line makes a swipe tag on R1 who is running behind him. The tag is on the leg of R1 and the contact makes the ball come out of the glove and it rolls away. R1 misses home plate and momentum takes him away from home plate.Throw back to home plate to make a play on R2 who is sliding head first is late. Ump calls him safe.R1 who knows he missed home plate then comes back and reaches in with hand to tag the plate. No appeal on play, but is R1 safe even after he touches the plate after preceeding runner tags home? What does OPA ump say about this play.

Jay,
This play was put to much discussion recently. I am not OPA ump but here is the general just of the play.
The rules state clearly that once a trailing runner has touched home plate the preceeding runner leagally may not return to touch home plate on a miss the first time by. The crux of this rule also requires that the offended team must make an appropriate appeal on the missed home plate touch by R1. As nothing was appealed both runners would be safe. If there had been a appeal on R1 missing home plate by the defence, then R1 should be ruled out at that point.
Hope this helps. If you want the exact rule for this please repost your request and we will give it to you.
