Batter hits a ball to the rightfield gap. As he's rounding first, with the ball still rolling in the outfield, the first baseman is clearly standing in the way just inside of first as the runner makes the turn for second. Although there is no contact, the runner has to come to almost a complete stop, shift his feet, and get his momentum going forward again. This same runner, after the ball is recovered and fired in to second, is put out by a short margin at second base. What's the right call? And would it be the same if the runner was just barely put out at third base?

John- Obstruction on fielder, delayed dead ball.Runner called out on the play then safe because of obstruction. Judgement call by umpire to as how much distance runner lost because of the obstruction. An obstructed runner may not be called out between the two bases where obstructed. In this instance between 1st and 2nd. In this case close play would allow runner to be placed safe at second because the runner lost more than the one step.If was put out by more than distance runner lost would be placed back to first unless preceeding runner forces runner to second.
Close play at 3rd is not between the base obstructed so the distance lost makes this either a safe or out play. Since close play at 3rd runner called out then safe because of obstruction and placed on 3rd base because umpire judgement was runner lost more than one step.
