| In a fast pitch game, team A has only ten players and is using the FLEX for the pitcher. In the third inning the FLEX reports and bats for the DP, remaining in the fifth spot in the batting order. In the fourth inning, the shortstop (eighth in the batting order) slides into 3B, twists an ankle, and is forced to leave the game. What are team A’s options? RULING: Option 1: the DP could re-enter the game at the time of the injury and fill the vacant defensive position, with the FLEX returning to the tenth position. Option 2: if the DP elects not to re-enter, the team can continue with eight players on defense. In both cases, an out shall be called at 3B because there is no legal substitute for the shortstop. Also, an out shall be called each time the vacant batting position appears. (4-1D[2] 4-3E)

| The DP can only go back in the 5th batting slot if the DP still has re-entry rights.

| You are correct Opa, but if the DP can and does go back, it would give you nine (9) defensive players. Only thing is, you only have eight (8) batters and have to take an out in the eight slot where the girl is hurt and you have NO SUBSTITUTES.

| Perry is correct. If the DP has eligibility, she can return to the fifth slot and play defense and bat. So BATTING SLOTS 1,2,3,4,5(DP),6,7,9 equals a total of eight (8) batters. DEFENSIVELY, you have slots 1,2,3,4,5(DP),6,7,9,10(FLEX) equals a total of nine (9) playing defense. Without a substitute, Team A, will have to take an out in SLOT 8 for the remainder of the game. Remember that the FLEX is DEFO (Defense Only) when in the number 10 slot.

| SO if the Pitcher is in the 10th slot and bats in the 5th slot (for the DP), that had already batted once (assuming the team has batted around aleady, it is the 3rd inn), she can return to the 10th spot in the line-up if the DP returns to the 5th?

| by the time i got here Bill had this answered dead on. only thing i'll throw out there is a hint that helped me early on with the DP/FLEX. both players can play defense at the same time but only one of them can play offense at the same time. even if FLEX continues to bat in the 5th spot, the DP can enter the field for the SS but cannot bat. excellent scenario!

| No, Nov. When the DP re-enters the fifth slot, the Flex (that was batting for the DP) must go back to the 10th slot (OPTION 1), or leave the game.

| FOR MIKE F.: Can't play DEFENSE ONLY as the FLEX (Slot 10), and bat for the DP (Slot 5) at the same time. Only one at a time.

| This scenario boils down to one thing. Why would a coach start a game with the flex and no substitutes on the bench. Have actually seen this happen.

| FOR MIKE F.: (New Scenario) 10 PLAYERS - 1,2,3,4,5(DP),6,7,8,9.10 (FLEX). FLEX (Jones) is pitching. FLEX (Jones) enters and bats for the DP (Smith). Jones is now pitching and batting. Smith has left the game and the team is playing with nine (9) players. Jones, the FLEX is now pitching and batting in the 5th slot. If Smith returns to the DP slot, then Jones must return to the 10th slot, and play defense only (back to 10 players), or leave the game (continue with nine). PRINT OUT ALL OF THE INFORMATION ON THE TRAINING PAGE REGARDING DP/FLEX.
