| It’s the top of the seventh inning, with the home team ahead, 2-1. One out, with a runner on first base, and the batter has a 2-2 count. The pitcher delivers an outside pitch, but close enough that the batter goes after it. The batter swings and misses, and her momentum puts her body across the plate, whereas she is actually straddling the plate. The runner from first was running (stealing) on the pitch, and because of the batter standing over the plate, the catcher has to double-clutch when she throws down to second base (the catcher has to actually step slightly to the right side to avoid contact with the batter). The catcher finally releases the ball, and the runner is safe by a close margin at second base. What call if any would you make?

| batter is out since it's strike 3 based on the facts stated, i'd call interference on the batter subsequent to being put out, thereby calling out the runner 3 outs, end of game

| Judgement call on wether you thought this was interference or not. Since you state that the catcher double pumped her throw down to second. I would have to call interference on a retired batter and the runner closest to home would be out also. In this case the runner on 1st. I think this happened in a Jefferson game once with Mr. Lunger umpiring behind the plate.

| Jefferson at Sparta about five years ago. A Sparta win gives them the SCIL title, outright. A Jefferson win, ties Sparta with Pope John for the championship. Definitely interference on the batter (now a retired runner two outs). Therefore, the ball is dead immediately, and the runner closest to home plate is also out (three outs). The runner and the short stop didn't hear the interference call, so the play continued after the catcher released the ball. Kevin Gaynor, the base umpire heard the interference call loud and clear, and never made any call on the slide and tag at second. Runner out, game over, Sparta wins, Jefferson cries, Pope John disappointed. Frank Canning (Pope John coach), who was at the game and saw the play, agreed that the call was correct. Sports "On the Go," has it on video.(RULE 8-7-P)
