R1 is on first. B2 hits a fly ball to right field. R1 leaves before the ball is touched.
The ball is caught and R1 retreats toward first. As R1 slides back into first, the throw from the right fielder sails over the first baseman’s head into dead ball territory. The umpire awards R1 second base, the base that they were going to, plus one.

ahhhh, an old myth resurfaces! award is 2 bases from release, not base running towards plus 1. i remember that from my little league days. you know, when all bats were wood!!

runner is awarded 3B. she must properly retouch 1B or can be called out on appeal for not tagging up

8-5-G.
Overthrow: Always two (2) bases from the last base touched at the time of the release by the fielder (no such thing as halfway on an overthrow). In this case the runner did already retouch first base on the slide back into the base. R1 is awarded SECOND & THIRD.
