| extra base hit, obstruction called on first baseman as runner rounds first on the way to second. runner passes second on to third when the throw from the outfield gets the runner on a bang, bang play at third. what's the call?

| two possible answers: 1)if in the umpires decision the the runner would have reached third based if no obstruction occurred then the runner is safe at third. 2)But if in the umpires opinion the runner would have only reached second base the runner is protected to the base in which he would have reached. This runner after reaching the base to which he was protected passes that base and now proceeds at his own risk. Out at third.

| i agree with the above response, almost identical thing happened in a 14 girls softball game I did about 2 years ago. i called obstuction between first and second runner was out by a mile going to third, called her out as she would not have made third in any event.

| i agree with the exception that there can only be one resolution to this specific example runner is awarded third base. allan's play was called correctly - he said "she was out by a mile". but john's example states the runner was out on a bang bang play. anything that close obviously means she would have been safe @ 3B if not for obstruction. gary's answer is correctly stating the rule, but this example tells us it was a very close play
