| Last night we had a runner on first, and there was a fly ball to centerfield. Our runner went about halfway to second base and the ball was caught. As she was running back to first, the centerfielder threw the ball back to first to try to get her out. The throw was high. The first baseman had come up the line toward second about four steps or so and she jumped up, right in the baseline. She missed the ball, and it continued to sail out of play. When the first baseman came back down, she lost her balance and collided with our runner returning to first, and they both fell down. After they got up, the umpire awarded our girl second base. Then the other team said to the umpire that our girl never went back to touch first. The umpire called her out. We asked the umpire, but we didn't get a real clear explanation. Was this the correct call?

| Was it the correct call no. When runners are awarded bases they still have to tag up and they have to touch them in correct order. I am assuming the umpire called your runner out because she never tagged up. Now why i told you the umpire got the call wrong is that you always get 2 bases on overthrows. So your runner should of been awarded 3rd base and not second.

| Does the obstruction have any impact on the call?

| In softball, the runner would be protected between 1st and second because of this obstruction. The ball went out of play so the obstruction did not cause an out. Therefore obstruction would not be called. If the ball had not gone out of play and the runner was tagged out, she would be awarded the base she was going to which would be 1st base. If the runner was going to second, and the umpire felt she would have made second, could award second, and the runner would have been given time to complete her legal needed base running, which would have included tagging up at 1st. Since she did not tag, the out was the correct call on proper appeal. As Neal said, the only wrong call was only awarding the runner 2nd and not 3rd. Remember that the award is from the time of the throw, not when the ball goes out of play. it is also 2 bases if thrown from the field and 1 base if thrown from the rubber(which would be a pitched ball)
