| R1 on 3rd - R2 on 1st with 1 out. On pitch R2 steals 2nd. Defense throws ball to SS and picks off R1 at home - on play R1 runs into catcher with no slide just in front before batters box up the line resulting in a late throw at 3rd to get R2 trying to make it to 3rd. Defensive Coach wanted Interference call on R1 since she had contact with catcher and she didn't slide. should this of been interference on R1 which would make R2 out?

| I need just a little more information before I can answer your question. The picked R1 off at the plate. That would have been a tag play so contact would have to be made. Did the runner run into the catcher after she made the tag? The catcher was up the line in front of the batter’s box. That is a least 3 feet, was she in the base line without the ball (obstruction)? Or did she catch the ball then step into the base line for the tag and help create the contact? Do you think the runner would have been able to reach the plate if she did slide that distance from the plate? There is no rule to call a batter out due to no slide the rule is out on the contact. All aspects of the contact needs to be examined.

| Mike: 1)Did the catcher have the ball at the time of the contact? 2)And if the catcher didn't have the ball, was she in fair or foul territory when contact was made? 3)If the catcher did have the ball, was the runner already out when the contact occurred? Perry

| The catcher played the ball perfectly - she was at the top of the plate and moved up the line to catch ball Ball was in control well prior to contact with runner. Runner definatly knocked her off balance making the throw to third difficult and late.

| Sounds like contact was made AFTER the runner was out. If that is correct, then we have a retired runner creating interference. Which means that the runner closest to home plate is also out.

| I agree with Perry. Runner at home is out, then interferes. Since that runner was out first, then interfered, the ball would be dead on the interference and the runner heading to third would also be declared out.
