| Saw this happen in a game last night. Batter has no strikes. Runner on 1B. Runner stealing as batter swings. Batter gets a piece of the ball, but catcher catches it. I thought since the bat hit the ball, it would be considered dead ball and the runner would have to go back to 1B. Ump said runner stays on 2B because catcher caught it. I've never seen that happen before or never had an ump make that call. Was the call correct and if so where can I find that rule in the ASA rulebook? thanks.

| had that happen in a showcase 5-6 weeks ago in mercer county park. coaches argued the runner had to return, i told them no, it was a foul tip. they continued and i asked them if they were serious [since i'd expect at that level they'd know a basic rule]. they were and i spoke with them after the 1/2 inning in more detail. they said they had never seen it before. doubtful of that, prob hadn't 'noticed' it. odd what we run into....
