| Play - Fast Pitch. A pitch strikes B1 on the hand while she is holding the bat and did not swing and deflects into fair territory. F1 picks up ball and throws to F1 at first base. When the plate umpire awards B1 first base, team A coach insists it should be a fair ball. What is the correct ruling?

| the hands are not part of the bat. you have a hit batter on this play. ball is dead immediately when it hits batter. she did not swing, so you do not have a strike UNLESS umpire determines that batter's hands were in the strike zone when she was hit - that would be a strike. otherwise, batter is awarded first base. defensive coach is incorrect. since plate umpire awarded 1st base i'm sure he/she explained it well to the coach.
