| A umpire in my softball game told me that a runner is now out if she slides head first into a base. Is that a new rule?

| ASA does not address this, so it is legal to slide head first into any base or plate. This might be a local league rule.

| It must be a league bylaw. There's no such rule in ASA or anywhere else that I am aware of. It sounds like parents are trying to put a "protective bubble" around their kids. I wonder if it applies to diving back into a base on a lead, or after running past a base. To me, it seems to border on the ridiculous.

| I am sure that it is a local rule, however I know several leagues that have the rule. One of the leagues a men's league that I occasionally umpire has the rule because someone got paralyzed sliding headfirst. I always ask about special local rules before umpiring a game.

| Not only "no such rule," a local league bylaw would be almost impossible to enforce. Number one, it's adverse to the rules of the game, and secondly, sliding or trying to avoid tags is open to interpretation. Sliding actually makes the game safer. There would be more direct collisons if players couldn't slide.
