| I'm not an umpire, but have had this same situation occur more than once, so I would appreciate the clarification. Either I or several umpires don't understand this rule correctly.
R1 is at 3b, B2 walks, and is jogging to 1b. R1 is holding her lead off 3b as ball is returned to P in the circle. Umpire calls R1 out by lookback rule, although B2 had not yet reached 1b. I believe lookback starts when ball is returned to P and batter runner reaches 1b. Our umpire was sure that lookback is in effect as soon as P has ball in circle regardless of position of batter runner.
Thanks

| Lookback rule does not go into effect until the batter/runner has reached 1st and the pitcher is in posession and control of the ball in the circle.

| You can not get 2 outs because of the look back rule, however, If The batter runner is called out at first and the pitcher has the ball in the circle under control without making a play, any other runner may be called out for violation of the look back rule.
