| Runner on second base gets hit by a an untouched batted ball as she is approximately one foot off of second base while advancing to third base. The umpire rules the runner is not out because in his judgment the batted ball was heading into the outfield and neither infielder had a reasonable chance to make a play. The runner continues running after the ball is deflected into the outfield, and further away from the center fielder than if the ball was untouched. The runner scores. The defensive coach argues the center fielder was denied the chance to make a play on the runner scoring, so the runner hit by the batted ball should have been ruled out. Who is correct?

| Once the ball has passed an infielder, other than the pitcher and no other fielder has the opportunity to make an out the runner is not out if hit with a batted ball and the ball is live and in play.

| If the short stop and second baseman were playing "straight up," and I assume that from this description, then I would think that you would have to declare the runner out.

| Based on what is stated here, with the ball hit right up the middle, I think that the runner would be out.

| I believe that the runner should be called out and the batter awarded first with a base hit if the ball did not pass the infielders when it hit the runner. This is not a judgement call of hit or not, the rule indicates past the infielder or not.

| I agree with Allan, but I believe that you no longer credit the batter with a hit. I'm pretty sure that they now get a "fielder's choice."

| Rule 8 Section 7-K states: when a runner is struck by a fair untouched batted ball while not in contact with a base and before it passes another infielder excluding the pitcher, or if it passes an infielder and another fielder has an opportunity to make an out. EFFECT - the ball is dead and the runner is out.
if the 2B & SS are playing "normal" depth, i.e., behind the base line, the runner on 2nd has to be declared out. center fielder is not part of the equation... the runner interfered. if infielders are playing in - to cut down a runner at 3rd for example, then play on since ball passed every infielder

| The problem I have with this play is that I can't get past the fact that the outfielder has a reasonable chance to make a play on the runner scoring. And the rule states that 'no other fielder had a reasonable chance to make a play' A similar situation is where the first baseman is playing in for a bunt with a runner on first. The batter hits a rocket past the first baseman that hits the runner off the base running toward second. Now let's also say that the right fielder had already thrown out 2 batters at first in the game on base hits to right field. Can't the argument be made that the runner should be called out if the umpire believes the right fielder has a reasonable chance to make a play on the batter/runner at first base.

| Per the original post, there is no play available at home plate at the time the runner is hit by the batted ball.
