R2 on 1st and R1 on 2nd with 1 out. Batter hits deep fly ball to right field. Both runners correctly tag up, but R1 runs directly into Short Stop who is 4 feet from 2nd in the base line, and force to run around her. U2 correctly puts up delayed ball signal. U1 does not see the signal and calls
R1 out on a bang bang play at the plate. Offensive coach properly appeals and after the umpires consult, U1 has play stand because R1 was only protected between 2nd and 3rd. Was this the correct application of the rule?

If the umpire who called obstruction only felt the runner would have made 3rd, then that is as far as she is protected. Advancing past 3rd, she would be at her own risk. However, the obstruction rule does not say the runner is only protected to the next base when obstructed. The rule states, at the conclusion of play the obstructed runner and all other runners affected by the obstruction are to be awarded the base or bases they would have reached absent the obstruction. Based on your description of the play, it sounds like the runner should probably have been protected to home based on having to go around F6 and being a banger at the plate.

I had a very similar play several years ago. Runner on first, base hit to right, runner on first obstructed going to second, she gets thrown out going to third by a mile. I called the runner out as she was only protected to second. Big argument my partner backed me up. Good feeling when you know thatyou are definitely right

When a runner is obstructed, the runner cannot be put out between the bases the obstruction occurred. Only protected is not the correct terminology. If the runner makes third safely, no o0bstruction will be called. In the Umpires opinion, if she was obstructed for 2 or 3 steps and was thrown out within those steps at home she should be awarded home, however if she was thrown out by 4 or 5 steps, she would be called out. In softball, the runner is awarded the base that would have been reached had the obstruction not occurred. If in Allan’s case, the runner was thrown out at 2nd would not have reached 2nd without the obstruction, the runner would be put back to 1st base.
