| I just saw this watching Michigan vs. Georgia NCAA softball and was surprised. A batter who was running up to slap the ball was hit by pitch clearly outside of the batters box, she was awarded first base. I am not sure of the correct call but I don't think that she should have been awarded first base, what is the correct ruling.

| July 10, 2010 plays and clarifications. Same rules apply as if they are hit inside the box. If they make an attempt to avoid, they are awarded 1st base, if not they remain at bat with a ball added to the count. If they prevent the ball from entering the strike zone, it is a dead ball strike.
