| Wild pitch and runner at 3rd runs home. Batter doesn't move an inch out of box. F2 flips ball to F1 coming toward home and from my angle ball hits batter. At same time Runner slides into batter and then wiggles under batters legs about a foot or so to touch home. I call batter out for intetference and runner back to third. This was the correct call. However coach argues that flipped ball hit runner and not batter. Suppose the coach was correct. Would the call still be batter interference? There were 4 players all congregated around the plate.

| if the throw hits the runner, I would have to say incidental contact. And I would have no call and let the play stand

| Dave has it right. Interference. Ball is dead. Batter is out. Runner returned to third.

| How is it batter interference if the batter did not interfere. The question is if the ball hit the runner? Please explain your rationale thanks

| I have been watching thie series of responses on this and I am a bit confused. Unless I am missing something the question is not whom the ball hit, but if the batter impeded the defensive team from making a play at home plate. It seems to be that the umpire made the right call as the batter remained in the box when they should have gotten out of the way. I would think that the batter's inaction made it unfairly difficult for the catcher to make a play.

| who says the batter has to get out of the way? The batter just can't disappear. As long as the batter does not interfere with the play. I HAVE NO CALL The batter has every right to be in the batters box.

| The batters box is not a sanctuary when there is a play at the plate. Rule 7-6-U and rule supplement 33B. But, that being said, the batter must actually do something to interfere with the play. In the op, if the ball did not hit the batter, but instead hit the runner, what exactly did the batter do to interfere? Based on the description of the play, they actually hindered their own teammate more than they did the defense.

| Do not know where the runner was positioned when thrown ball to pitcher? hit runner. If in judgment of umpire the batter interfered with a play at the plate we have batter interference. Batter out and runner returned to third. Batter has obligation to avoid interference of any play at plate. Standing like a deer in the headlights is not trying to avoid interfering with play.
