| A batted ball was deflected by diving SS from fair territory into foul territory and stopped 2 feet from dead ball territory. Left Fielder comes hustling in to retrieve ball, slips on the wet grass and pushes the ball out of play. The BR was standing on 2nd base when the ball became dead. My partner rules 2 base award. Is this correct

| All runners move up one base from where they were at time the ball goes into dead territory. See number 27 in rules supplement Imaginary line or dead ball area.

| The award is 2 bases from the time the ball was kicked into dead ball territory. It is treated exactly the same as a thrown ball. It wont let me copy and past the clarification here, but it is in the July 2009 ASA rule clarifications.

| Richard only 2 bases if umpire rules it intentional. Check supplement 27.

| I am well aware of what rule supplement 27 says, however this is not a ball that was carried into dead ball territory, it was a ball that was knocked into dead ball territory. I gave reference to the ASA rule clarification in my last post. It will not let me cut and paste so I will type it out. It clearly states a ball kicked into dead ball territory is treated exactly the same as a ball thrown into dead ball territory.
Play 2: With no outs and R1 on 2b, B2 hits a line drive to F7. R1 is off on the hit and headed toward 3B when F7 misses the sinking line drive and knocks the ball forward on the ground in front of him. While running in and trying to scoop up the ball, F7 kicks the ball into the 3B dugout. When the ball entered the 3b dugout, R1 is two steps from 3b and B2 is not yet to 1B. Which bases should R1 and B2 be awarded? RULING: R1 is awarded home and B2 is awarded 2B. The ball being kicked into dead ball territory would be treated the same as if F7 threw the ball into dead ball territory. Each runner would be awarded two bases from the time the ball left F7's foot. (Rule 8, Section 5G)

| A new wrinkle on this ruling. Suppose outfielder was running towards out of play area left or right side- and just short of out of play fly ball hit outfielder in play and then went out of play. No carry or kicked ball. This should give you the answer of what would be a common sense ruling of how many base or bases to be awarded.

| The wrinkle makes this a completely different play. A ball deflecting of a fielder and a ball being physically forced out of play by a fielder are two completely different things. If the fielder provides the impetus that pushes to ball out of play, it is treated exactly the same as a thrown ball and is a 2 base award.

| to award two bases catch and carry out of play a player has to have control of said ball in hand or glove. Any other way except intentionally will be one base.

| Again, I have posted the applicable ASA case play. If the defensive player provides the force that pushes the ball out of play it is treated exactly the same as a thrown ball. 2 bases from the time the ball was kicked.
