| Please go to the TRAINING PAGE, and scroll down to see the picture under 2016 NEW PLAYING RULES, and look at the picture. Some new eye black designs were certainly a phenomenon this past spring and summer. IS IT LEGAL? Our staff believes that the answers for A.S.A. and Federation are different.

| No. The player must remove the eye-black until it is a straight line under the eyes. Nothing else is allowed .

| Neither ASA or NFHS rules set say anything about how eye black can be worn. Some states have made their own rulings on it, but the actual rule sets make no mention of it.

| If it's just black, that's one thing. But I think that on some pitchers, the face designs, along with the "bling" hair band, and mirror sunglasses, too, can be down right distracting. I understand that making an easy-to-enforce rule could be difficult, unless it is just outright banned. My two cents.

| Not sure about softball, but high school baseball states, "unless the extensive eye black is deemed to be profane, intimidating or taunting intended to embarrass, ridicule or demean, the face paint is legal." (3-3-1g-2). Hope to hear more about both federation and A.S.A. softball.

| For discussion only, but here is what the Iowa high school softball association declared in 2015: Eye black is intended to reduce glare not to be used as face paint. When players use eye black extending down their cheeks in various patterns or with multiple stripes of it on each cheek, the product is not being used properly and should be considered unsporting. When discovered after the game has begun, a team warning should be issued, and that player or players should not be allowed to participate until it is used properly. Any subsequent offender(s) shall be ejected from the contest. Coaches, please monitor the use of this product by your players in order to avoid a potentially embarrassing situation for all involved.

| Some states have instituted their own rules regarding eye black in high school softball. But, you will find no rule in either ASA or NFHS that mentions anything about eye black or how it can be worn.

| Ac cording to our sources, New Jersey (high school), came out with a state ruling for football and all Fall sports, that it was to be "one line under the eye." Spring sports will follow suit.

| Bill is right in NJ HS softball (federation) eye black is only allowed to be worn with one line under the eye. In ASA, although no rules stipulate on how it can worn the rule book does allow the umpire not to allow anything he finds to be offensive and is up to his discretion
Rule 10 Section 1. Power and Duties
