| 12U Girls Fast Pitch Game. After the top half of the first inning, the coach of the home team asks the umpires to check the pitching distance since her pitcher had walked two (2) batters and went to a full count on two (2) other batters. The umpires have the distance checked and discover that the pitching rubber is at 43’ (feet). The home coach insists that the pitching rubber be left at 43’ for the bottom of the first as well. She states “fair is fair, and they’re pitcher should have the same disadvantage in the bottom of the first, that we had in the top of the inning” What is the correct ruling?

| 1) Umpire's manual , chapter 3, "Umpire Crew Entering Field" , A.3. Insure the field is properly marked and the bases and pitching plate are set at the proper distance. Good pregame would prevent this from happening. 2) NFHS rule book says Rule 1 Sect 1 Art 9 Once the game has started, if it is discovered by or brought to the attention of the umpire that the pitching distance...are incorrect, the correction shall be made immediately. The game shall continue and shall not be protested for this reason. 2a) ASA rule book says Rule 2 Sect 1 If the base distances or pitching distance is found to be at the wrong dimensions during the course of the game, correct the error, with no penalty, and CONTINUE playing the game.

| We were at a USSSA 14U tournament this Summer, and we watched a game during a break where they found that first base was at 65 feet at the end of the top of the first. And they played it like that for the bottom of the first. They then moved the base to 60 feet for the top of the second.

| The wording in USSSA rule book is identical to ASA. I have worked a few USSSA tournaments in the past and found the oversite and training is spotty at best and can vary tremendously by location.

| Most coaches don't seem to know that you need to correct things like this at first notice. There seems to always be an argument on these distance issues as to when they should be corrected.

| No matter how much you check, there's always a few that get past you on distance. Pitching distance or base distance, doesn't matter. The sentiment is almost always the same by new or young coaches. They, for whatever reason think that you have to "penalize'" the other team for the same amount of time. When in reality the correction is to be made right away.
